Unfortunately am not in good health at moment but will reply when in better health, but can you give d.o.b for Alice Cowmeadow and is she daughter of James Howard Cowmeadow & Leah Sterry, if so and born 1900 she is great granddaughter of Cornelius Cowmeadow 1799 and Jane Baldwin 1800, none of these are related to me but Cornelius 1799 & Jane had a son Cornelius 1829 who married my GGG Aunt Jane Hannah Marfell 1834 they had 10 children

Hi Jim and Celia
It’s been a while since this post was active, but I thought it was worth getting in touch as I may be able to add a missing part to the jigsaw puzzle.
I was intrigued to come across your post whilst researching the family history on my mother’s side. My Great, Great, Grandparents were Simeon Harris and Selina (nee Williams). My Great, Grandfather was Simeon Herbert (Bert) Harris who married Alice Cowmeadow. They had 4 children (Helen *Ruth, 1909, Norman Bruce, 1911, Simeon R. *Mervyn, 1912, and Stuart Herbert, 1914). Their father inherited and grew up in Simeon and Selina’s house, in Drybrook. Three of the children never married and lived there their whole lives. I used to visit my Great Uncles there, as a child (Auntie Ruth passed away quite young). I have wonderful memories of my visits there. I believe the house still stands, but I’m unsure who owns it now. Only my Grandfather, Norman Bruce Harris, moved away from the family home and ended up in Birmingham, where he met and married my Grandmother. They had two children: my Uncle and my Mother. Sadly, only my Uncle is still alive from that side of the family as the others, including my Mother, passed away some time ago.
I am so grateful for all the incredible research you have done. Thank you for helping to fit my own family tree together!

Hi Jim
You have confirmed the George Marfell and "Mary" for me - many thanks.
I wonder if your children of Simeon and Selina the same as mine?
The nine children of Simeon and Selina Harris which I have always known about, and have photos of seven, plus several of their children(all now deceaed) are;

Emily (Spinster)
Anne/Annie
Simeon Herbert(Uncle Bert),
May
Lilian(known as Sylvia),
Minnie MM,
Jane
Levi
and one called Benjamin whom my brother and I know nothing about.

After having just gone throught the FoD Bible Christian baptism reg transcripts on this site, and found nine baptisms,(also three deaths from burials and GRO deaths) it seems to make a total of 14 children so far. I recall my father saying that one of his parents was one of 22 children not all of whom survived, and I always assumed it was his father, but now I'm not so sure.......

I can give details of offspring of eight of the above if this is of help to you. Grandma is the only one in the family that I know with the Marfell name - it doesn't seem to have gone further down the family.

I'm currently trying to scan and archive all the old family photos, so may eventally be able to have some on the site.

Cheers, Celia (your 5th cousin, once removed??)

Hi Celia

I do indeed know of Minnie Maria Marfell Harris born 1876 Nailsea Somerset – my 3rd cousin 3 times removed, so we are related. Her grandmother Sarah Marfell born 16 March 1807, daughter of George Marfell 1765 and his first wife Mary. George was the son of one of my 5 times great grandparents John Marfell 1731 & Lucy Meek 1743. More of them later.

Within this family are a number of “Marfell” second names and more marriages into the Marfell family; as you say, Sarah Marfell 1807 married Thomas Williams born 22 Jun 1806 and their 3rd son Thomas Williams 28 Jun 1835 married Jane Thomas, they had 6 children incl. Thomas Williams born 1861 who married Eva Marfell in 1885, they had 3 children before she died and he remarried to Eva Marfell’s sister Winifred and they had Kenneth Marfell Williams.

I am aware that your line stems from Thomas Williams & Sarah Marfell’s daughter Selina born 14 Sep 1840 who married Simeon Harris. It is obvious that you can help me here as whilst I am aware of 9 children for Simeon Harris and Selina Williams including Minnie Maria Marfell Harris, I have no details of any of the descendants of the 9.

The “Good Christian Woman” Maria Marfell, I think must be Maria Marfell born 3 Jan 1844 who married John Cowmeadow 1837. John Cowmeadow died 29 Sep 1877 and Maria nee Marfell emigrated to Niles, Ohio, USA in 1897 with Son Alexander John & daughter Annie Jane to join sons George Harold & John Marfell who emigrated in 1895 to work in a Tin Works. Maria Marfell was the great granddaughter of John Marfell & Lucy Meek mentioned in the first paragraph.

Hi Jim
Not sure whether this will be of interest to your MARFELL interest, but here goes for you to decide.

My paternal grandmother was Minnie Maria Marfell HARRIS, grand-daughter of Sarah MARFELL (bapt 1807 Ruardean) and Thomas WILLIAMS, GGD of a George MARFELL.

She was given the middle names after Maria Marfell, "a good Christian woman" to quote my late grandma whose family were all from down the Forest.

I had my 1st cousin 5 times removed Charlotte Marfell's marriage to James Preece who was a Ross Baker born 1778, but hadn't made the connection to this posting. Not sure how I do now !!

I didn't however have Thomas Marfell Preece - Thanks.

Just to tidy things up, Charlotte's mother Elizabeth nee Barratt, daughter of Cornelius Barratt & Mary Carruthers actually died 8th February 1781, buried 11th February 1781 Mitcheldean.

John Marfell PEARCE Ross on Wye (reply)

Dave

You have me really intrigued. The Marfell Family are my main interest and the Marfell name is often used as a middle name when a Marfell lady has married, I also have one case of a "Jones" changing his name to Marfell Jones to please his spouse. Could you tell me more about John Marfell Pearce, I may be able to help you. I have 1452 Marfell's in my family tree, mostly with every associated Census entry, I have about 660 Marfell certificates and every Marfell Birth, Marriage & Death register entry.

The only link I can find between the Marfell's and the Pearce family is that an Alma Emily Pearce married George Edwin Marfell, but this marriage took place on 9th April 1903, Christchurch, New Zealand and he was born in Kentucky, USA in 1865. George Edwin Marfell is obviously not connected, he is on the 1870 Census Scott Township, Allegheny, Pennsylvania. USA.

John Marfell PEARCE Ross on Wye

I am having difficulty in finding a John Marfell Pearce on the 1871 census for Ross on Wye. He appears on the 1861 Census living at Broad Street Ross. His occupation is shown as Grocer/Ironmonger and his age is shown as 35 and born in Mitcheldean. If anyone is able to shed any light on this I would be very gratefull.

Regards, Dave Stamp
