Further to my earlier note marriages for children are recorded in the Parish Registers:
17 May 1874 James married Carmella MORGAN at Parkend

At this moment in time I do not know why the name of AMBREY was taken but you will find many entries in the Christchurch and English Bicknor Registers in this name.

Hello again, that's brilliant - I'd assumed she could have been Rhoda's daughter as she appeared in the 1881 census with her grandparents, but described as boarder, not grand daughter...

Do you have any idea why they might have taken the Ambrey name though? it's a real puzzle.

I've also noticed that none of my posts, i skipped a generation - Emily Evans Ambrey was in fact my husband's great grand mother,

thanks for all your help, Ruth

Ambrey/Ambury/Ambery (reply)

Dear Mike, thank you so much for shedding some light on this quandary which has had me sighing deeply in frustration for some while... interesting that he went by the name of Evans, but also by the name of Ambrey (in one of its many versions).

at least 2 of the children also went by the name Evans - Emily Evans Ambrey eventually became my husband's great great grandmother...

I have found many entries on different databases of the Ambrey variation, I'm assuming this was a strong local name, as Wilkins also appears to be.

Once this virus calms down, we're hoping to visit the Forest of Dean, to get a better sense of where the family came from.

William Edwin Wilkins was registered as a free miner in June 1920, but by 1925 had set sail for Philadelphia where he worked as a miner for some 6 years before returning to the UK

Thank you for your help, it's a great forum.
Ruth

Ambrey/Ambury/Ambery

Hello, I am researching my husband's family who lived and worked as miners in the Forest of Dean for many years from the middle of the 19th Century. I am particularly keen to find more information relating to the Ambrey (Ambery/Ambury) family recorded as living in Mosley Green, West Dean, in 1871. There is a 14 year old girl, identified as Rodha, on the census, but I can find no trace of her before or after the census...was the name a mistranscription? The surname is spelled differently on various documents, which does not facilitate researching. Her father I believe was James Evans Ambery, , b 1829. The 1881 census which I believe relates to the same family does not include her, but does include a Thirza Mary Ambery, born 1875..could this be her daughter?

I would be grateful for any information on this girl, or indeed any member of her family. Thank you. Ruth
