Glass making in the Forest of Dean (reply)

Roger

I am interested that you wrote that research about the Hewletts who lived in Bradley House was done some time ago. My husband is directly descended from Samuel Hewlett of Bradley House and there have been a number of family traditions in our family (our branch live in Sydney, Australia). I am trying to find more specific information and would appreciate any leads.

It is interesting about the glass making in the Forest as this has been a tradition "that the Hewletts were glass makers in Gloucestershire for 600 years".

Thank you very much Slowhands and Roger, I will try and get a copy of Cyril Hart's book. and yes the family connection is the Samuel Hewlett at Camp Mill Foundry. I haven't explored 1841 Ayleburton, I will make it next on the list.I have plenty to keep me busy. Good job I have recently retired.

Glass making in the Forest of Dean (reply)

You've got a famous Forest name there. Samuel Hewlett something like 1780 - 1850's was originally a carpenter, then blacksmith, then made iron castings for rails and ended up a railway company director. My memory is a bit hazy as this line of research was a long time ago. He had a house, Bradley House, just down the road from Soudley going towards Blakeney. It's still there.

There is a book by Cyril Hart. Industrial History of Dean. Glass making is probably included. The windows on my GGrandfathers house on Bradley Hill are probably local. Although built 1870, they are slightly tinged green and are not flat. Poured molten glass into a mould?

Glass making in the Forest of Dean (reply)

The slag from blast furnaces is used in the production of green glass. Given Mushet's pioneering work in the Forest, it would not be a surprise to find small glass production in the Forest.

I have read that the famous Bristol Glass works were supplied by Forest produced "glass"..

I have come across a Samuel Hewlett with a Forge, is this a possible connection to Glass works ?
