The following entry appears in the 1939 Register:

122 Offord Road, Islington, London, England
Flannery household
Elsie (E Grace May) Burrows (Flannery) 11 Mar 1922 Female Messenger Girl Single 216 3
The record for this person is officially closed.

The evidence attached to the death of Thomas Flannery in 1919 appears sufficient to tells us that Grace lost her husband yet we have Thomas again in 1939 and the birth index entry for Elsie Grace May tells us that her mother's maiden name is WHITE.

Hello Heather
I know I have come into this debate quite late on but I thought you might like to know that the Vicar and Congregation at Christchurch Parish, Forest of Dean (where Thomas is buried) is planning an event to coincide with the 100th anniversary of the commencement of the war 1914-1919 in the church this coming August (2014). I am helping to put together some of this information some of which includes army papers etc for Thomas Flannery.
Could I suggest you keep an eye on the local press etc., nearer the time as this might be of some value both to you as a seeker and others who might be interested in the whole subject of WW1.
Regards

Name changing ? (reply)

Thats fine Heather, no harm done but thanks for your post.

Re you suggesting there being two Thomas' in Joyford; yes this is possible altho your mention of one also being referred to as Martin is interesting and deserves further investigation/understanding. However I must say I'd got the impression from your posts, sorry if I'm wrong, that as Alfred was born (or at least registered..?) in London then that was the area we were looking at - hence my speculative post yesterday which I hope was of some help to you.

May I ask in what record the name Martin appears, this seems important to me ?. In my FH travels I've seen people's forenames apparently change thro time, I dont think it was that unusual, sometimes for convenience wrt children. This also occurred if a son was Christened "as usual" with their traditional family name, perhaps Thomas in your case, yet in subsequent Census forms etc it was clear they normally used his second name presumably to avoid confusion with the elder Thomas or even Thomases already within the family. This practice even reflects some foreign cultures, albeit coincidentally; when at Polytechnic I found some Arabs will have several names, but no "set" first name, sometimes they varied wrt which name they used, I recall some confusion when students returned for another year in the course but registered under a different combination of the same names !

I've also seen examples of men clearly baptised with a particular single Christian name; yet later in life they "suddenly" also adopt another middle name. In my case our Harry was baptised, married and buried a Harry, these PRs being echoed by the various Civic Registrations. However during the 1911 Census he "suddenly" also adopted his father's name as a second name, which was the family's traditional one to boot. We have no idea why this happened, it wasn't to remember a recent bereavement for example, his father being alive & well. In our case we wonder if Harry knew (at the 1911 Census) he'd be joining the Army before war broke out and perhaps was worried about his future in the trenches so wanted to somehow reflect his father's name, altho thankfully he survived the war. Unlikely but perhaps possible too, we just don't know ???

Grace WHITE / FLANNERY / HARDWICK (reply)

Hi jeff

This is so very kind of you I really appreciate it. I fully understand that requesting information about living people is not the right thing to do and I will not persue that line of enquiry, I just didnt think sorry! I was so pleased that people on your forum had given me information i forget to draw the line.
I did notice that Thomas Flannery's father in one record was Martin and in another record Thomas so there is a possibility of there being two Thomas Flannery's in Joyford - a little strange I know but worth persuing.

Thanks for taking the time onve again

Thank you for taking the troubleWHITE / FLANNERY / HARDWICK (reply)

Hi Heather,
thanks for your message, we're only too pleased to try and help.
Are you a subscriber of Ancestry or suchlike ?. I'm not but I can still run a free search. Hopefully this link will take you to the results, if not you can search yourself of course.
http://search.ancestry.co.uk/cgi-bin/sse.dll?gl=ROOT_CATEGORY&rank=1&new=1&...

These marriage results shows that altho the name Thomas Flannery is not at all rare country/world wide (altho not a typical Forest name), and there are a few Flannery/White marriages around the UK (tho White is relatively commonplace I think), it only suggests ONE to a GRACE White.

This single Record is reflected within the FreeBMD results, which altho don't cover the whole UK arepretty true for our region:

Surname First name(s) Spouse District Vol Page
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Marriages Dec 1916 (>99%)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Flannery Thomas White Monmouth 11a 33
White Grace Flannery Monmouth 11a 33

http://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl

Even before seeing these results, I too find it hard to believe there were two such marriages, if so why wern't they apparently recorded ?. It seems even more unlikely there were two within the same Regiment, altho I'm unsure as to why you think this a possibility.

Re-searching the CWGC site shows a few Thomas Flannery casualties. Repeating the above free search on Ancestry's "Military" section shows sets of WW1 Records for several Thomas Flannerys. If you have access, either as a subscriber or from a public library, you might like to try and read all these records. Some of them (ie Pension/Service Records where available) will carry more detail including next of kin, so this is a way you MIGHT find out if there's more than one Thomas/White marriage or other family link. However this is a long shot I think.

-------------

Would Grace & her Flannery inlaws in London have been very religious, I don't know but if they were strong Catholics would that affect whether Grace would/could re-marry soon after 1919 ?. I've seen a few cases of WW1 war-widows who do re-marry into the same family (indeed Grace did in later life), sometimes as a marriage of platonic companionship or perhaps more than this especially if between young friends, neighbours or even cousins ?...
I GUESS if living in postwar Holborn MAYBE life was tough and the extended family were living in quite close proximity ?.... Alfred could have been born out of wedlock, and possibly the father's name on the Certificate is an attempt by Grace to maintain "respectability" etc if only to remember Thomas's name to the baby Alfred, it wouldnt be the first birth certificate to contain slight untruths.

To me it seems equally possible that Alfred's father was another Thomas Flannery, it was clearly a popular/common name at that time and perhaps especially within their local "Irish" community #. Could Grace have been living with her father-in-law, also Thomas it seems. I don't know, was he still alive in 1926, if so where ??. I ask as I've seen cases where widowed mothers move-in with their equally bereaved father-in-laws, in fact they could already have been living under the same roof while Thomas was away in the Army. In some cases such people become more than companions, "like father like son" perhaps...

# pure speculation maybe ?, but communities amd families did stick together as we know, particularly in very difficult times such as post WW1. I've lived in Greater London since the mid80s and know the Irish traditionally stick together and why not of course, but I'm sure you have a much better idea as to whether these circumstances are likely for Grace way back when ?. I'm sure whatever she did was in the best interests of herself and her young family. Hopefully you know her circumstances better than I can guess, such as when & why she eventually found herself back in the Forest, maybe back to her White family; this may hold some clues.
I've tried searching FreeBMD & Ancestry for Elsie & Alfred to get an idea of their adult lives & localities, I presume you've done this too and with hopefully more luck than me. Ancestry does have a private members tree for Alfred, apparently with Leicester links, if not already your tree perhaps they're worth contacting.

Anyhow, enough of my speculation, I do hope at least some of it is of interest or even help, and wish you well in your search.

Thank you for taking the troubleWHITE / FLANNERY / HARDWICK (reply)

Thankyou for taking the trouble to answer my request and for looking up the information you gave me.
I believe that Grace White / Flannery moved to Holborn in London prior to my father and his sister being born. I am trying to find someone who may have known her to find out why my dad and his sister's father (supposedly Thomas Flannery)name on their birth certificate 6 years after his supposed to have died. I am having trouble believing that Grace could have married another Thomas Flannery. The other option is that there were two Thomas Flannery's in the Lancashire fusiliers married to a Grace White.
Any help would be appreciated. I will try the papers as you suggested
Thank you so much
regards heather

WHITE / FLANNERY / HARDWICK (reply)

Thanks Slowhands & welcome back, if you've been on holiday I hope it went very well.

Searching the Council Cemeteries website I see some of the Hardwicks buried at Mile End are from the Coleford area, possible family members perhaps ?. These include William & Harry's brother James:

It's possible the address may still be within the Hardwick family, Heather may consider following this possible lead.

From the same address, perhaps descended from Jessie b1871 ?.

I can find no Flannery names on that site. Could this suggest that side of the family have moved on, perhaps back to Lancashire/Liverpool and even Galway. Or perhaps more likely to London, there's long been a strong Irish prescence in the Camden & Holborn areas as per the above Records. That said, GlosBMD do have some more recent Flannery records, most out of the Forest except this one:

Again I suggest the newspaper archives may be worth searching, these prior threads may help you wrt FoD papers, I do hope so.

WHITE / FLANNERY / HARDWICK (reply)

I am looking for information regarding my grandmother Grace White who born in Joyford/Coleford in 1896. She married Thomas Flannery in 1916 and they had a daughter Edith Elsie in 1918. It appears that Thomas Flannery died in 1919 at the age of 28 and is buried in Joyford. However Elsie had two further children one of which was my father Alfred born 1924 whose fathers name on his birth certificate is Thomas Flannery which cannot be correct unless I have wrong information about his father. If there is anyone who knew the White / Flannery / Hardwick families and has any information that would help me sort this out could you please let me know.

I have Grace White / Flannery as having married Mr Hardwick between 1950 - 1965 if any one has information about this marraige I would really appreciate it if you could let me know.

(I assume when you mention Elsie having further children you mean Grace).

Searching "recent" births is difficult within this and other sites for the reasons mentioned earlier, the PRs are not made public. I recommend you use the "advanced search" feature for baptisms, at bottom of the PR search page.
http://www.forum.forest-of-dean.net/index.php?mode=page&id=22

Using this I've just searched, for example, the whole database (many many thousands of PRs), just searching for all Alfreds with father Thomas baptised post 1919, I couldnt see yours. Similarly for all children mothered by Grace White. Further more intensive searching using similar inputs on your part may produce better results.

As well as this site the Glos Archives site may be very usefull and is easily searched, unlike this PR (Church Record) based site it also includes Registry Office records, and sometimes more recent than this FoD site.
http://ww3.gloucestershire.gov.uk/bmd/SimpleSearch.aspx

Searching local newspapers may well find this Marriage & possibly more detail.

Grace WHITE / FLANNERY / HARDWICK (reply)

Kind regards
Heather Blockley
