Charles Thorne B1850 in 1870 New York Census ? (reply)

Hi Jefff,
Thank you for the post, the US Census and naturalizations records are confirmed. The immigration records are variable and not yet enough to tie him to the FOD family.
Not sure how I will find a US marriage record for Charles and Regina, they seem to require a US county to start looking. I have tried a few German surnames which popped up in researching, but nothing certain. I will also try to find a 1947 California death record for Regina Thorne as the name seems rare and therefore worth pursuing. Not sure if they contain a maiden name.

Thank you most kindly for this information. I have checked all information available and it all seems to confirm this is the same person. Newnham and his occupation as a Tanner was the clincher. This is a big find for me, a brick wall has fallen.

Hi Kujen, and a warm welcome to the forum.
Thanks for your great post, and finally solving this puzzle after all these years. Sadly it seems that Russell is no longer active on this forum (his username being displayed black, not blue) - but hopefully he will still see your post in due course.

I've just tried finding more records for Charles Thorne using the FamilySearch site as it included USA records, I wonder if this might possibly be him ?.

Charles Thorne B1850 in 1871 GLS Census (reply)

Hello Russell.
I'm at a grave in the Mountain View Cemetery in Piedmont, California, USA.

I have Charles Thorne at rest Jan 23, 1914 with his wife Regina Thorne at rest Oct 14, 1947.

This url goes to a newspaper clipping with the obituary. It says Charles came from Newnham, Gloucestershire, England.

He died at his home 1339 Kansas Street in San Francisco.

https://cdnc.ucr.edu/cgi-bin/cdnc?a=d&d=SFC19130125.1.15&

It's a great spot under a tree.

Hope this helps.

I know that St Peter's Church in Newnham is not far from the banks of the Severn.
I agree with the "Under the Cliffs" interpretation, that seems to be used locally along the banks of the Severn.

The 1850 birth record is the one, as ALL the other ones on this post, my confirmed cousins.
I have often wondered how Ancestry.Com would respond to suggested corrections to their transcriptions. I have seen the originals and know how hard it is to arrive at the correct transcription.
It is Thorn(e) and the birthplace for John Thorne is Stogumber in Somerset.
