Barzillai Meek Marriages (reply)

Hi,

I wonder if someone might be able to help me clear some confusion.

Barzillai marries Elizabeth (Jones) - 12.06.1819
Barzillai also marries Hannah Cowmeadow following the death of Elizabeth (d:10.09.1937)- 24.09.1842

In the1851 census the meek family (transcribed at Mick) shows Barzillai married to a Diannah Meek whilst also living with Hannah Cowmeadow and her illegitimate daughter

Where I am struggling is that the census seems to say that Barzillai is already married to Diannah when he supposed to be already married to Hannah.

I may have got this wrong but the census has caused me some confusion.

Many thanks,

Craig

Page No: 13
Parish_Chapel: Cinderford St Johns

Yeap ! One or two lived in Victoria St / Valley Rd area of Cinderford, so I expect them to be laid to rest in St Johns.

In 1851 the widowed Elizabeth Cowmeadow was the Inn keeper at the Victoria Hotel in Cinderford. ( St Johns Parish)

< however these Cowmeadows are not the branch being debated in this thread, others seem centred on Harry Hill and the Forest Church ( blacksmiths / boiler makers), no doubt if we go back further there will be a common ancestor >

William was a chimmney sweep in Ruardean, and had been caught and sentenced for stealing apples and potatoes on two occasions, The robbery "felony" was the third strike and out- very literally.

a marriage for Barzillai and Elizabeth. Which parish records would you suggest I try to find the marriage in?

I'd start in Mitcheldean, then Ruardean, then Lea, then Newland/Flaxley etc

Ann MEEK 1822 Lea (reply)

Hi Slowhands,

I have just found Ann Meek's birth entry on the IGI and the others for the other children.

Thanks for the info. I can't seem to see anything that shows a marriage for Barzillai and Elizabeth. Which parish records would you suggest I try to find the marriage in?

I think I shall have to send for the marriage cert of Barzillai to Hannah Cowmeadow. That should at least confirm whether his father is Cornelius as I suspect.

I don't suppose you have found Ann MEEK on the 1841 have you? I would like to know where she is. It might give a clue as to the father of Harriet Meek, Ann's daughter.

Are there Bastardy Bonds for this area? I wonder if any "missing" fathers are in them?

Although the Cowmeadows are not directly related to me, they are certainly a colourful bunch with not many scruples from the looks of it. Although transportation for 21 years for stealing a hat seems a little extreme. Although I doubt it would be his first offence.

Hannah COWMEADOW 1816 (reply)

Thanks Slowhands for the extra snippets of information.

Hahhah would only be around 13 then when she was sentenced to prison for stealing peas. No doubt the family were hungry.

In 1840 when she was sentenced again for stealing potatoes she had a 3 year old illegitimate daughter to care for. I wonder if she was already living with Barzillai at that time or whether she moved in and he took care of her afterwards.

The Cowmeadows seem a pretty lawless family as she had two brothers who were Highway robbers.

Ann MEEK and her father Barzillai MEEK

I have just received the marriage certificate of ANN MEEK born c 1823 ish. Ann was the mother of Harriet Meek, born c 1845. Harriet was illegitimate.

ANN MEEK married Thomas ADAMS in 1846 and on the certificate Ann's father is named as BARZILLAI MEEK.

I have found BARZILLAI on 1841 census age 48, occupation Lime Burner. Living with him are daughters, Elizabeth 15, Maria 12 and Charlotte 10. Also living with him is Hannah Cowmeadow age 25 and Mary Ann Cowmeadow age 4.

On the 1851 census I have found BARZILLAI age 58 in East Dean, living at Lea Bailey Hill, Hurst Butchers? By this time he has married Hannah Cowmeadow and "adopted" her daughter Mary Ann. The only daughter living at hom now is Maria. Barzillai gives his place of birth as "Dean Forest"

BARZILLAI married Hannah Cowmeadow Sept quarter 1842. Hannah would be his second? wife. Does anyone have any information on Barzillia's first wife. She must have died sometime between the birth of her last child c1831 and the 1841 census.

My ANN MEEK is not living at home with BARZILLAI in 1841 and she is married to Thomas Adams by 1851. Ann's daughter Harriet was born in Lea Bailey abt 1845.

BARZILLAI's would be born abt 1793 and I have found on the IGI a birth for a Barzillia in 1793 in Mitcheldean with parents Cornelius Meek and Elizabeth Taylor. I had thought that Barzillai as a name would be fairly easy to track but there are several Barzillai's around this time.

Can anyone find ANN MEEK on the 1841 census?

Does anyone have any connection to BARZILLAI MEEK. Barzillai may also have had a son Elijah MEEK born abt 1824 as there is a son called Barzillai born abt 1851 to Elijah Meek and Mary Ann.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Jenny
