Toll Houses & Turnpikes (reply)

Here's a very detailed spreadsheet of Turnpikes & Toll Houses across Glostershire, it lists six in the Coleford area.
http://www.turnpikes.org.uk/Tollhouses%20of%20Gloucestershire.htm

The list is from this interesting website
http://www.turnpikes.org.uk/

The site's list of surviving Tollhouses gives one for Coleford - Pike House on the Chepstow Road at Sling, not to be confused with t'other Coleford in the Somerset Mendips near Wells. Pike House appears to now be a holiday let, photos here http://www.holiday-hideaway.co.uk/index

Coalway Toll House(s) (reply)

I also thought I had seen the picture before, it is published in Joyce Latham's book "The Forest of Dean Revisited" on page 112. The caption just say's Coalway turnpike 1888

The Humphrey Phelps books "The forest in old photographs" also has pictures fo the Whitecliff turnpike (Second edition- brown cover page 37) and the Poolway turnpike (first edition - green cover page 133) The caption for this one states "Sixpence would be a usual charge for a carriage house. Local cart traffic or going to church was exempt from toll".

Coalway Toll House(s) (reply)

Located at SO 588104 ( Ordnance Survey ref to our overseas readers)

in the New Regard Volume 14 1999 ( para-phrased)

"... there were two Toll houses in Coalway Lane End.

a/ SO 588104 at the NE corner of Coalway Cross, in the area of the Britannia Inn, ( a photograph from 1888 was published in the New regard article)
Gates to Parkend road and Milkwall. Photograph shows a young Kate JENKINS ( later KEAR), and a Miss Gleed.

b/ SO 587104 in Coalway Rd opposite the School; this appears to have been demolished in 1973.
"

UPDATE

The 'photo mention on the Commanet archive ( http://www.themorganfamily.net/fod/coalwaygate.jpg ) bears an uncanny resemblance to the New Regard 'photo - the young girl is believed to be Miss Jenkins, and the older lady Miss Gleed.

JAMES MORGAN, Newland & ANN (BATTON )Lydney

In 1861 James MORGAN (81) and Ann (83) are Toll Collectors at Coalway (?) Gate. Does anyone know if there is or was a toll house there?
The only possible bt I have found for James is 29 Feb 1784 s of William & Mary at Newland. But his consistent census age indicates a birth in 1780. Has anyone found a bt for James Morgan in 1780? Or does anyone claim the 1784 James?
