Richard Fryer of Overton Arlingham 1620 (reply)

Further to my previous thoughts, there is an interesting baptism of John Fryer (1598 -), where only his mother's name is given as Anne (her maiden name appears to be Hiles). Perhaps the father died before John was born? John does not appear to be listed as a base child.

In the lack of further evidence, it would appear that this John married Agnes Butt at Arlingham on 23 Sep 1617. A daughter, Anne, was baptised at Arlingham in 1618.

The family then crossed the River Severn, as three sons were baptised at Westbury on Severn and the residence is given as Rodley, which is on the opposite bank to Arlingham. Apparently there is an Arlington Passage, which allowed people to cross between Arlingham and Newnham at low tide, which would have been in use in the early 1600s.

The three sons of John and Agnes were: John (1620 - ), Thomas (1623 - ) and Richard (1626 - ).

The latter, Richard Fryer (1626 - ), is my 8th gt-grandfather, whom I was trying to identify.

Richard Fryer of Overton Arlingham 1620 (reply)

There was a Joane King, daughter of John, baptised at Ledbury, Herefordshire in 1636. In 1622 there was a burial of Richard Fryer, son of Richard, at Ledbury. Both of these are on the FoD Records.

There is great confusion on Ancestry concerning Richard Fryer (1620 - ), or was he born in 1626?

There was a baptism of Richard Fryer at Westbury on Severn, with father John, in 1626.

Many of the trees have him married to Joane Jaques (in London in 1744) and quite a few have him married to both Joane King and Joane Jaques - unlikely as Joan Jaques was still alive.

It seems entirely possible that the Richard Fryer who married in 1658 was born at Frampton on Severn in 1637. He was the son of Walter Fryer (1597 or 1601 - ) of Arlingham.

There is little certainty about any of this.

How interesting! I can't find your tree, sadly. I've got WATKINS and several other ancestors from Arlingham. Our Fryer folk seem to be from Newnham. Can you let me know your username of Ancestry by private message if you like, so I can track down your tree that way, please? Have you done a DNA test? We probably won't find a DNA connection that far back but possible could pick up a DNA connection more recently. :)

For anyone who has spent time transcribing these old records, they deserve a medal.

Ancestry has many mistranscribed records. The registers can be damaged (eaten away) and the writing difficult to read (old English etc).

The ability to search for witnesses is a bonus, wish Ancestry had the same facility and the same goes for the Bonds/Licence records.

Very grateful to everyone involved.

The alias looks interesting

The Fryers I am looking for are from Overton and in cloth trade. I am now looking at the will John Friar weaver of Overton 1614.

I have also seen 16th century Haberdashers apprentice document in London for one of this family.

If you would like to see the family I am following check out the top of the Humphries and Knight Family tree on Ancestry which links in to my Watkins ancestors. I'm happy its correct to the Richard Friar Joan King marriage but I would like some good evidence for the next generation back.
