BNA, Hereford Times Saturday 01 April 1843

TRIALS OF PRISONERS IN THE NISI PRIUS COURT

GOODRICH – STEALING COAL

Judith Smith, the mother, aged 44, and Elizabeth Smith, the daughter, aged 13, were charged with stealing on the night of 13th March, about 1cwt of coal, the property of Ellen Wilce of Goodrich…………. A previous conviction was proved against the elder prisoner (the one for larceny at Ross -stealing a piece of cotton print)………..Guilty………….The prosecutor and Jury recommended the younger prisoner to mercy……..thought that the best thing that could be done for her would be to remove her from an abandoned and worthless mother, who, without doubt, had encouraged and brought her up in crime. (Sentence 12 months imprisonment and hard labour for the mother. The first and last to be in solitary confinement. The same term for the daughter but to be employed in such work as her tender years would admit of.)

Thanks for that - at least another direction to look in, the census information for monk Breton and Worksop does tie in with the William little I am looking for, and I think his parents were from Bristol, but doesn't tally with what my aunt thought, hence the need for further information!
