Although I am still looking for Jane/Janet/Janetta Colwell/Colwill/Coldwell/Cowell, the research you have done and the way you have laid it out has made me look afresh at that census information in connection with Janetta's father. He was illegitimate. On his marriage certificate he gave his father as Thomas Child and low and behold he was living with him in Upleadon in the 1851 census. What I couldn't find was his mother. I was looking in the Tibberton/Rudford/Upleadon area where Thomas Child came from - even went to Gloucester Record Office to search. But looking at the census info. you have provided, although contradictory it was pointing to Worcestershire or Staffordshire. So I've looked on the IGI site and found Samuel Colwell christened at Saint Mary's Hanley Castle Worcester 7th April 1811 and born to one Sarah Colwell - no mention of Dad. Surely, 'on the balance of probability' that's got to be our Samuel.

Incidentally, you have provided me with information on Charles Richards that I didn't have and which I can now follow up further.(He was Esther Colwell's second husband - she married 3 times altogether.)

I am trying to trace the sister of my great grandmother Harriet Colwell. Her sister appears in the 1861 census at Ruspidge (visiting with her parents) and on the 1871 census as living at Flaxley. She is named as Jane, daughter of Samuel and Esther Colwell (spellings of Colwell vary at various times - e.g. Cowell and Colwill). On this website she is recorded as being baptised as Janetta Colwall June 27th at Tibberton. On the BMD Index her birth is recorded as Janet Colwell born 1858 AMJ Newent Glos 6a 206.

The problem is I cannot find out what happened to her after the 1871 census. I cannot find a record of her marriage or death as Jane, Janet or Janetta Colwell.I've also tried variations on the spelling of Colwell.

Is there anyone out there who has also been researching this family?
