Further to Joseph Ambury - I have just been given the birthday book which belonged to his granddaughter Annie Maisey, daughter of Anna Ambury. In it she gives the entry on August 6th "Joseph Ambury, 1816. Died at Remuera, Auckland, NZ June 9th 1898"
She also has Dec 16 "Joseph Ambury Jun, 1847 died April 1937"
Aug 19 "Mary J Ambury"
Nov 17 "Stephen James Ambury"
Jun 13 "Sarah Ann Ambury, died July 13th '33 aged 80"
May 13 "Arthur Ambury, died Jan 1943"
Feb 5 "Walter Ambury, 1858, died Oct 1943"
Jun 16 "L John Ambury, 1862"
Dec 18 " Anna Ambury, 1862, died Aug 1st,1939"

sh also has an entry on July 29, Joseph Ambury Senr. married '46 at Newnham Church.
This confirms which Joseph is mine, now all I need is confirmation as to who is his father.

Ambury & Hall (reply)

I do have some information on Joseph Ambrey and his family. First of all there are several Ambrey families in the area at the time of Joseph's birth (1816-1818) and they all have a habit of naming their sons Joseph or William, as they are all distantly related.

You record Joseph as born at Longhope but christened at English Bicknor. I believe that your Joseph is the one baptised at Longhope in 1817, son of Joseph and Mary as I have a Joseph christened at E. Bicknor in 1816 son of William and Mary who is the brother of Ann Ambrey from whom I am directly descended. There is also a Joseph Ambrey baptised in English Bicknor in 1818 son of Joseph and Mary Anne who could just be your Joseph, but I think the Longhope one is more likely, unless you know differently.

I have a copy of a will of a Joseph Ambrey in 1825 who decribes himself as of Morastone, Peterstowe, Hereford but gives his son Joseph properties at Aston Ingham and Longhope where your Joseph later resided. As well as Joseph, his son, he mentions his sons John, Anthony, Robert and James, and his daughter Anne or Anna. His wife is Mary. I also have copied a will dated 1862 where a Joseph Ambrey leaves property at Longhope to daughters Eliza and Elizabeth, money to daughter Jane, and mentions grandson James, the same land at Aston Ingham to his son Joseph, other grandchildren- Mark,William and Joseph Drinkwater There are quite a lot of wills available on line at the Public Record office, also an online index of wills at Gloucestershire record office.

It may not be connected but a Mary Ambrey dies at Longhope in 1818 aged 33.
I think the Joseph you are descended from (if it is the one who makes the will proved in1825) may have married Mary Morris in 1809 in Bridstow as the Joseph at that marriage describes himself as of Longhope. The witnesses are Joseph Ambrey and Mary Phelps. There is however as usual another Joseph getting marries to a Mary Bennett in 1810 in E.Bicknor.

If your Joseph is the one marrying Mary Morris then his father is Anthony Ambrey, mother Jane Jones and is the same line as my husband is descended from. Anthony is one of the brothers of yet another Joseph from whom I am descended!

Complicated or what? Some of this is tenuous as there are other Josephs around who could fit the bill, and it seems from some of the wills cousins lived in the property of other cousins so it is very confusing. I have been working on and off on these lines for quite a few years and I'm still not sure I have the right connections.

Hello Deb
I have been looking through my collection of wills and the majority are from Gloucester or Hereford Record Offices. The ones available on the internet are at the national Archives www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documentsonline You need to search all the permutations of the surname but the ones of most interest are Joseph Ambery of Peterstow and William Ambery of English Bicknor. Gloucestershire record office have a list of a lot of their wills on line which I imagine could be ordered, but this can get expensive. They are at www.gloucestershire.gov.uk
Hope this helps a bit for the time being

Hi Rhianon
That would be great any help would be appreciated. I'm actually lost to my Gt x how many Grandad Thomas, making guess'es at present, but will get there I'm in contact with many people now trying to link them all up, and I'm sure we'll get there. I tried this evening to find the wills and not sure how you got them?? if its easy for me to find please just e-mail me the link as would hate the thought of taking up your happy retirement time, you just enjoy it!!!! but any help would be most appreciated.
I'm actually in touch with a descendant of the Joseph line and told her tonight I may hopefully have some info her in New Zealand, I didn't realise it costs them alot of money to find out so I'm trying to help them with anything.

Take Care, Good Night Debbie Ambury

Hello Deb,
I am not surprised you are confused, there are so many Ambrey/burys with the same christian names, and most living in a relatively small area of Gloucestershire and Herefordshire. I was just about to go to bed when I picked up your message, but will try to answer your questions this week. Basically a lot of the properties do not have specific names in English Bicknor, but can be identified over the years from the wills. I am retiring in July and hope to spend some time sorting them all out, and hopefully putting some on this site - grandchildren permitting!

Hi I wondered if you might help, I've been going the cencus with the name Ambury and soundex etc and have sat this afternoon going back over my 'trees' now I have on the English 1841 cencus that Joseph b 1791 Peterstow was living at Hope Brook Farm with his wife Eliza, Joseph 1817, Elizabeth b1834 and Eliza b1836, I also have a Joseph b1791 English Bicknor St Briavells, wife Mary and a Joseph b 1821.
My first Joseph in future cencus shows the family who later emigrated to New Zealand.
My question is these wills as to which Josephs wrote them as you mention that one mentions his siblings William and Anne and then another mentions his other sons as John, Anthony, Robert and James who I also have family trees for.
Also could you tell me the actual names of the land if possible as can check out the addresses.
It crossed my mind that Joseph and Mary had Joseph, John etc around 1790, who then went on to have Joseph, Elzabeth and Eliza.
Oh so confussed!!!!
Do hope you can help?? as I'm trying to tie in all the families and so close but yet so far.
My GT GT Grandad is Thomas Ambury born Abergavenny who I think is descendant from John b 1791 peterstow I think his mother Frances may of died in child birth as she disappears at this time, if you have any info on that I would be most grateful also.

Thanks, Take Care Debbie Ambury
