This is how my family tree first started,however thanks for the tip.I was researching details of my ggrandfather after watching a programme hosted by Ian Hislop on BBC2 about WW1 and he suggested the War Graves Commision site.Luckily for me my ggrandfather had completed his next of kin details before he left as I would never have been able to trace the family back to the FoD and discover so much interesting information,it can get rather addictive.

You may or may not know of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission Site

This is a good site for finding whether ancestors have been killed in various wars. Usually a name is all you need to find them on the site.

It is worth checking your research on The Great War Forum site as they have a wealth of information. I have been able to trace a lot of detail for my g grandfather who was killed in 1918 and was in The Northumberland Fusiliers . It has taken many hours however it was very rewarding. Happy hunting.

Thank you for that, grampy never really spoke much to anyone about the War, dad only knew the names of the places he went too.
I was given his service medals in 1972 to look after.

The dates are interesting
To Tidworth. Jan. 1915 Basingstoke. Feb. 1915 Blackdown, Aldershot. June 1915 sailed from Avonmouth. July 1915 landed at Gallipoli. Jan. 1916 to Egypt

15th of June 1916 he was definately still in the area, He is listed as present at the death of Frederick his baby son, Cinderford Bridge, East Dean.

7th (Service)Battalion., The Gloucestershire Regiment.

Formed Bristol Aug. 1914. 39th Brigade, 13th Division. 4 battalions to a brigade, 3 brigades to a division.

To Tidworth. Jan. 1915 Basingstoke. Feb. 1915 Blackdown, Aldershot. June 1915 sailed from Avonmouth. July 1915 landed at Gallipoli. Jan. 1916 to Egypt. Feb. 1916 to to Mesopotamia. July 1918 39th Brigade. to North Persia Force. 31Oct 1918 39th Brigade North Persia; Bijar.

My Grandfathers Sisters stepson was a company commander in 7/North Staffordshire Regiment. 7/NS's was in same Brigade and Division from Tidworth onwards. Same Brigade in 1918 but different deployment in N. Persia. and Russia. He was killed at Gallipoli.

Service battalions were part of The New Army of 30 divisions generally referred to as Kitchener's Army.

I saw that there are a lot of military listings lately and wonder if anyone can help

My grandfather served in the 7th Battalion Gloucester Regiment in the Great War, I have a reply from the Soldiers of Gloucester Museum stating

We have checked our database and there is a very brief record for 31833
Pte B Ireland, saying that he served in the 7th Battalion and the rest of the record is blank,

They confirm that the 7th Battalion served in Gallipoli, Egypt, Mesopotamia and Persia with the 13th division

Would anyone know any more information on the 7th Battalion?
