Location of Coleford Meend Park End Walk 1841 (reply)

A family group, 'the Miles band' worked small mines thereabouts for some time. Can you say more about him to identify which Thomas Miles you are interested in? There may be a link to my family tree.

Location of Coleford Meend Park End Walk 1841 (reply)

Mike, Thanks for your help. I was led astray by the census enumeration district description of Park End which is some distance away. Coleford Meend is not on the modern survey map I have and appears to be a rural area. My relative Thomas Miles was a small time coal proprietor. The map you provided shows there was once a lot of small mines in the Coleford Meend area and I think he may have had small mine there.

This one, from 1918, certainly marks a Coleford Meend. It’s NNE of Coleford right at the edge of the map.

http://maps.nls.uk/view/102346004

Can be found on Streetmap too - in the same place.

Location of Coleford Meend Park End Walk 1841

Some of my coalmining ancestors were living at the time of the 1841 census at Coleford Meend Parkend Walk. Up to 1838 their address had always been Lane End Coleford. I assume they must have moved to Parkend after 1838 but have not been able to find a Coleford Meend on any of the modern maps of Parkend. I know there was a lot of coal mining at Parkend so the move to Parkend seems quite logical but where was Coleford Meend. The name Coleford suggests it would be at Coleford not Parkend. I think there must be a simple explanation but can someone with local knowledge please sort me out. Thanks.
