--------------------------------

The British History website also gives this reference to a William Pride at Alvington at this same time, who may possibly be related to the above events ?

"The manor house, ALVINGTON COURT, and the demesne lands were leased by Llanthony priory in 1537 to Arthur Porter, who received them in fee together with the site of the priory, at Gloucester, in 1540. Arthur (d. 1558 or 1559) was succeeded by his son Sir Thomas Porter (d. 1597), whose son Arthur sold Alvington Court farm in 1599 to Sir Robert Woodruff. Sir Robert (d. 1609) was succeeded by his nephew Robert Woodruff (d. 1638) and Robert by his son Thomas. At the end of the century the estate belonged to Sir George Woodruff who sold it to the lord of the manor John Higford (d. 1706). It then passed in turn to John's brothers, James, the Revd. Henry (d. 1715), and William (d. 1733). William left it to his son William (d. 1770), who gave a life interest to his wife Elizabeth. She married c. 1774 James Eaton but separated from him in 1780. On her death or surrender c. 1791 the estate reverted to her brother-in-law, the Revd. Henry Higford. In 1805 John Parsons and the two Davis sisters sold Alvington Court farm to William Pride, who sold it in 1808 to Thomas and John Morse. Thomas (d. 1833) left his share to John, who sold the farm in 1837 to Nathaniel Lloyd (d. 1845). Lloyd left it to his brother Thomas, who left it to his nephew John James (d. 1855), a Newnham solicitor."

Wow, thanks so much for your help!
I'm a newby to the whole family history thing and learning as I go!
Could someone please post the link or a picture of the transcript you are looking at?
I don't even know where to find what you are talking about :-(

Hi Terry, and welcome to the forum and website.
Please can you help us better understand your situation. I ask as although you're a newby (which is fine, we've all been there, I still am! ) your first post shows you have information which (from the dates etc) appears to me to suggest that you have traced back to the first UK Census taken in 1841. A brief background as to how you know that information would be really useful in ensuring we help you in the best possible way, but without wasting time telling you things you may already know.
I'm also worrying a little that, given the Parish Record (PR) shows the name as PRIDE, are we certain this record is actually relevant for your PRIDER line ?.

Also, not essential, but whereabouts in the world are you ?. Judging from your posting times etc I guess you're in Australia ?, which is fine of course, we have a great many visitors from across the world. I was born in the FoD and have family still there, but have lived in West London, UK, for many years.

Looking forward to your reply, hence us helping you more in the coming days,
all the best, Jeff.

-----------------

In the meantime, have you seen these parts of this website;
http://www.forest-of-dean.net/joomla/help-faq/getting-started-in-genealogy
http://www.forest-of-dean.net/joomla/links/24-genealogy-research

Also this old post of mine might give you some pointers and explain some of the phrases used in other replies to your post, eg the various reference websites. Sorry I cannot give a direct link to my post, please track down to the last post in this thread.
http://forum.forest-of-dean.net/index.php?mode=thread&id=20467

For any query it's always worth searching this forum, in the past there have been many posts from "newbies" requesting advice etc, and we'll always do our best to help. That said, I cannot see any old posts re "William Pride/Prider", so maybe we're all in new territory here !, but it did find the above post for me. Certainly in my view it's far more rewarding to search and find one's own answers to queries, when possible, rather than rely on possibly erroneous replies from other people, especially when if the going gets hard then we're here in the background to help when needed.

Hi Jeff. Yes, I can see how the original image, available on Ancestry, might easily be read as PUDE or PRIDER but, after comparison with entries in the same hand it is clearly PRIDE. The event is recorded as 12th rather than 13th as given on CLDS.

Good evening Mike, apologies for my being dim yet again !.
Am I correct in thinking you refer to the Ancestry image of this site's "Pude" PR found by Paul, hence indicating that FamilySearch have mis-transcribed it ?

The more I think about it, so the more I'm sure that's your meaning, but I'm afraid it took me a while to grasp, so it's just possible other readers may also be wondering.

Thanks, Jeff.

Searching for William Prider on this site gives no results. Searching using the Advanced Search function gives William PUDE, baptised 12 Jan 1815 to parents John and Mary. Comment on the transcription says that the surname was not clear and was a 'best guess'. I will submit a correction request.
