<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>&quot;Before Hardwicke's Marriage Act of 1753 there was no lower legal age of marriage, except during the 1650's when it was 16 for men and 14 for women. In 1753 it was fixed at 14 for men and <em>12 for women </em>and remained at that until the Age of Marriage Act 1929 when it was raised to 16 for both.&quot; <br />

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The John Marshall mentioned May be Joseph Marshall born 1794. His Wife was Sarah Wheeler born 1802.<br />
I have Joseph born at Little Dean, Gloucester. His wife Sarah I have no information for. Hope this is of help.<br />

<p>On my quest fro Marshall info, came across this on the A2A website in quarter sessions, which may be of interest to someone. Not worked out who these Marshall's are yet.</p>
<p>FILE  [no title] - ref.  Q/PC/2/34/B  - date: Nov [1814] - Feb 1815<br />
         [from Scope and Content] Q/PC/2/34/B/9. 30 January 1815. Offender: John Marshall, mariner, and Sarah his wife, of Newnham. Crime: Holding a protestant religious meeting in their dwelling-house, contrary to law. Other details: F. Lawson, J.P., Rev. C. Sandiford, J.P., and Rev. R. Wetherall, J.P. John Cooper, yeoman, informer. Clement Chadborn, gentleman, and Elizabeth, wife of John Pearce, carpenter, both of Newnham, witnesses. More than 20 persons, apart from immediate family and servants, attended. Mitigated fine of Â£6. Crime committed 9 November 1814.</p>
