Jesse Morgan baptised 10.6.1860 Parkend UPDATE (reply)

Slowhands,
Please tell me you didn't just put in www.stantonironworks.co.uk???!! I spent a longtime yesterday looking for info on the iron works via google searches etc and local history sites but in all the searches I did this website never showed up! I never once thought of just trying the web address above.
Have got someway with finding out where Jesse is buried and waiting confirmation from the records office in Derby. The records office did hold records for the iron works but nothing of a personal nature just accounts etc so this new site I am sure will be able to help further.
Thanks again, can always rely on someone to come up trumps!

Given the registration dist of Shardlow , my guess is he was living south of Ilkeston toward Derby or Long Eaton

At its peak, Stanton Ironworks near Ilkeston employed 12,000 and was one of Derbyshire's
leading manufacturing centres.

For 150 years, Stanton Ironworks was the life-blood of the Ilkeston area, employing thousands of people
and generations of the same families.

Family history resources

Sources connected with major events

Family historians usually want to find out all they can about the major events in their ancestors' lives. Information about births, marriages and deaths can be found in Derbyshire Local Studies Library.

Here is a list of the most important resources we have to help you.

Civil Registration Indexes to Births, Marriages, Deaths: 1837-2001

Overseas Indexes, including Boer War, World War I and World War II deaths. We have a complete set of these.

Boyds Marriage Index, Derbyshire

Published Parish Register copies and indexes: including the Phillimore series for Derbyshire and some for surrounding counties.

Lambeth Palace Marriage Licence Indexes, 1543-1850.

A few Nonconformist and Roman Catholic Registers.

Lists of Strays. These are Derbyshire people who got born, married or died away from their home parish.

Monumental Inscriptions from churchyards and cemeteries: Derbyshire plus surrounding counties, particularly Nottinghamshire and Cheshire.

Wills indexes and copies.

Mining Deaths: 1850 to 1914 (indexes to HM Inspectors of Mines reports)

Newspapers - unindexed except for Derbyshire Times: Births, Marriages, Deaths indexed from 1981 onward and 1880 to 1894, 1900 to 1914, 1918 to 1919
Local Church St Andrew's (photo on their site)

St.Bartholomew - Hallam Fields Road.
Designed by Currey of Derby in the Early English style, St.Bartholomews was built in 1895 to serve the needs of some 1000 people living at Hallam Fields, most of who worked at the Stanton Iron Works. Its predecessor had been a temporary iron church, built in 1880 and later re-erected at Station Road.
The church was consecrated in 1896 by the Bishop Suffragan of Derby and served the community until its closure in 1969.

Jesse Morgan baptised 10.6.1860 Parkend UPDATE (reply)

I now have the death certificate for Jesse Morgan. He died on the 1st December, 1880 at Stanton Iron Works, Derbyshire where he was employed as an engine shunter. Cause of death is shown as 'accidentally killed by being run over by an engine at the Stanton Iron Works'. Certificate issued by the Coroner for Derby following an inquest on the 3rd December, 1880.
I have found out that the Derbyshire records office hold details of the Stanton Iron Works Company and hope to get some further details from them.
Now looking for a local history group or forum who cover that area to see if I could track down where he is buried. Has anyone any ideas??
A sad end to a young life.
Thanks for all your help
Alison

Jesse MORGAN 1860 Parkend - speculation (reply)

Slowhands,
I had found this possible death. However put off a bit as there is another Jesse Morgan born in 1860 but much nearer to Shardlow than my Jesse. Thought it was more likely to be his death but will probably have to get a death certificate to confirm one way or another. Still trying to rule out the other Jesse (born in Stone believed Staffs) by finding him alive after 1880!
Had hoped to find Jesse alive and kicking somewhere in the Forest!
Thanks again,

Jesse MORGAN baptised 10.6.1860 Parkend

Can anyone help find further information on Jesse Morgan?
Born 1860 to Father John Morgan b abt 1811 and Mother Mary Morgan born 1817.
1861 census shows Jesse aged 8 months living in Bream Woodside with parents and various relatives including children from Mary's first marriage to William Preest.
Mary Morgan dies in 1865 and John Morgan marries Hannah Davis in 1867.
1871 census shows Jesse aged 10 living with John and Hannah in Yorkley.
After this census I can find nothing further. Hannah is shown living alone in the 1881 census (John has presumably died) and she dies in 1890.
Any help to trace Jesse after 1871 would be much appreciated.
