East Dean Grammar school originated as Cinderford Higher Elementary school, which the county council opened in 1910 as a secondary school and centre for training elementary school teachers. Occupying new buildings south of Station Street, the school took children from 12 years and its curriculum included industrial and commercial subjects appropriate for local employment. It charged a tuition fee of £1 a pupil a year and awarded some free places to children selected from elementary schools in and around the Forest. (fn. 56) Known as Cinderford Secondary school from 1919 and East Dean Grammar school from 1927, it had 367 pupils in 1932

Capt Joseph Herbert Wright MC WW1 (Science Teacher)

Please can anyone help me with information on Captain Joseph Herbert Wright of the 8th Bn Glos Regt. He was "Science Master at a School in Cinderford", probably a private school or possibly a Grammar School. I am researching the names on the war memorial in Wilsden, near Bradford and J. Herbert Wright is one of them. Born in Wilsden, he had an older sister, both of them became teachers. Herbert won the Military Cross in January 1917 and had been wounded in the eye the previous year, probably wore an eye patch. He was k.i.a. aged 33 on 25 March 1917. I would dearly love to have a photo of him. Any help most gratefully appreciated.
