Adams' in Pennsylvania and Upstate New York (reply)

I have some Adams' related to me who went to live in New York (Poughkeepsie) and in Pennsylvania. My family is also related to the Teagues. I am wondering if there is a connection? I know Adams is a relatively common name but there are other coincidences, e.g. my family lived at Coalway, Lane End but had relatives in Herefordshire.
The Adams' I have were: Ann Mary Adams married to Charles J Rook(e) who went to Poughkeepsie in 1848. Two of her brothers also emigrated to the same area and one of them (George) had sons and a widow who moved to a small village in, Pennsylvania just over the border from Poughkeepsie. One of these sons was a blacksmith all his life.
Ann Mary's photograph is on this website and so is that of her son.
The brothers who emigrated were:George with his wife Eliza[beth] who emigrated in 1854 and Edward who emigrated with his wife Eliza[beth] at the same time. Charles Rook(e) died in 1854 a few months after his brothers-in-law reached the USA. I have never found the cause of his death or any records of his death or burial though I have a letter from Ann Mary which states when he died written four years later. Ann Mary Adams probably had a number of other brothers, certainly one called John who died in Worcester Royal Infirmary in 1858. A Teague also married another Charles Rooke in a later generation and it is likely that another Adams married a Rook in an earlier generation. This makes it not impossible that Ann Mary Adams might have been distantly related to her own husband, no closer than a second cousin.

James Adams married Eleanor Baglin nee Teague (reply)

Hello Jean

I thought I might add to Slowhands information. Eleanor was eldest daughter of William & Susannah Teague. They lived in the Barn Hill area, however this might help you, Eleanor's brother James who married a Susan Thomas did emigrate to America leaving behind their daughter Sarah born 1844. On 1851 census with aGeorge & Lydia Yarworth also sister of Eleanor. Sarah did go to America so perhaps they took her and stayed.

I also have a John Baglin who married a Susannah Smith on 1851 census with daughter Jane, born 1850, after this census they also dissapear. Susannah was daughter of James & Sarah Smith.

James Adams married Eleanor Baglin nee Teague

William Baglin married Eleanor Teague in 1832 Abenhall Gloucestershire. They had one child Sarah who was born and died the same year of 1833.

William died in Aug 1847 and his widow Eleanor married James Adams in 1849.

James was previously married to Eliza and had two children. Eliza born abt 1840 and Caroline born abt 1845.

On the 1841 census and baptism of his two daughters, James occupation is given as "Policeman" but on the 1851 census he is now a Coal Miner?

On the 1861 census his wife Eleanor is described as "Head" but there is no mention of James. It says she is married, not widowed. His daughter Caroline is shown living with Eleanor.

After this date, I can find no further reference to James or Eleanor. Does anyone have this family in their tree and can tell me what happened to them? Regards Jean Herbert
