re Samuel JENKINS will (reply)

Does his will mention any of his siblings?

Most of his brothers are dead or emigrated to US or NZ by the time he dies but younger brothers James and Shadrach are still in Bream - at least Shadrach was and was involved with the Bream chapel site which Samuel seems to have given to the chapel.

Samuel Jenkins born 1839 Pontypool (reply)

Thank you so much everybody!
You have all given me lots of information about the Jenkins side of my family, which I can add to my records and my family tree. I am connected to the Jenkins family through the Joy family (my mothers maiden name), and never expected such a response to my post! I have lots to investigate now.
It seems strange, but I have spent a couple of holidays at Ruardean, so I must have been drawn there!
Regards,

Samuel JENKINS/Mary Anne GAY? (reply)

Thanks M P Griffiths,
that's very useful. It looks like Samuel's father (also Samuel) married twice, as in the 1841 census Mary, his mother is shown as the same age (25), but by the 1851 census her name is now Mary Anne, and she is shown as 9 years younger! Also in the 1841 census living in the same house is a Samuel GREEN (aged 6 months, who does he belong to?
Thanks again for your help.

Samuel Jenkins born 1839 Pontypool (reply)

Hi,
I'm trying to trace the family of Samuel Jenkins, born Pontypool, Monmouth 1839. Father Samuel Jenkins. In 1861 (aged 22) he was a Coal Miner and was a lodger in the house of Mariane? Jenkins (Born in Bream) at Dark Hole, West Dean. She was a widow aged 65 and a Landed Proprietor. Was she related to Samuel or was it just a coincidence.
Samuel later moved to Leeds in Yorkshire where he married Sally Boulton in 1864, and after her death, married Elizabeth Joy in 1883 at Charlestown, Baildon, Yorks.
Any help will be much appreciated.
Regards,
Keith

With reference to Samuel Jenkins.
My mother currently lives in a house which we believe was built by Samuel Jenkins
in Bream. My grandfather purchased the house plus two others from John Jenkins,
son of Samuel in 1919. We have the deeds showing that these three houses were left to John by his father Samuel in 1891.

Thanks for the info, the years you mentioned may help more with Samuel's Father Thomas who left Samuel a House and land in Mill Hill Bream c1845. Samuel lived in Monmouthshire and worked in the Mines there, between 1838 and 1851. He then returned to Bream to live and work.

Samuel Jenkins 1814 - 1892 of Bream (reply)

Have you tried querying with Geoff Gwatkins about his maps of this area?
See http://www.forest-of-dean.net/?Landowners_Names
They are for periods around 1840-1850 but show land and property ownership at this time and are fabulously detailed and interesting. A listing and print costs £5.50. Obviously your ancestor would not have had so much time to build up his property portfolio and business but this could still show how things were developing.
