50 miles from Parkend ! (reply)

Thanks for steering me to another great web site.

My father, now in his eighties, believes my Great Uncle was based at Glascoed and would call at Parkend on the way to Ashchurch.

Incidently my father use to live at Fetter Hill, in a cottage once owned by Pace.

My father tells me that a murder took place there in the 1920's Mrs Pace poisoning her husband with sheep dip.

My Grandmother Emily Jones lived there until abt 1960, my father's half sister now lives in the property.

I believe the property was once used as the offices for Dark Hill iron foundry?

Regards

Tony

50 miles from Parkend ! (reply)

GIs in Ashchurch during World War II

From 1942 to 1944 in particular the suburban village of Ashchurch,

then just outside Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire, acted as host to thousands of GIs, who set up one of the most important logistical bases for the D-Day landings in Britain.

The base had a deep impact on life in Tewkesbury, as a source of employment and social life during a very austere war regime.

50 miles from Parkend ! (reply)

Tony

Well I guess Malvern / Worcester would be about 50 miles from Parkend, so how many "services" bases would have been in WWII within a circle centred on Parkend sweeping from Malvern around ? - a fair number I would guess !

Herefordshire had a number of RAF bases, such as Madeley & Credenhill, and a munitions factory - Rotherwas..

Worcestershire had RAF facilities at Defford, Croome Court etc

Gloucester had RAF Innsworth and Quedgley, Morton Valence and other.

In Monmouthshire the RAF base at Caerwent , munitions factory at Glascoed

Wiltshire - may just be in 50miles - Wotton Bassett munitions factory

sorry if this doesn't narrow things down

I am told he was a despatch rider.

I understand he was based within 50 miles of Parkend.
