Elizabeth Susan GITTINGS - B 1887 Staunton - Missing ! (reply)

Thank you both Jeff & mrsbruso for your comments.

As you have stated even today we complain about some names we have been given.

Can we possibly imagine what our ancestors would be thinking if they could see us delving into their past some two hundred years later.

Perhaps in 2200 we may be able to print out a picture/video straight from our human memory bank.

No doubt tapping messages on a computer will be stone age technology.

To man and the future...

Elizabeth Susan GITTINGS - B 1887 Staunton - Missing ! (reply)

Regarding the apparent change of names: My great uncle, always referred to amongst the family as "Uncle Jim" was actually Thomas James . . . and my grandfather, Charles George, mostly known as "Charlie", is recorded as George in the 1891 census. Why -- who knows, although his newly minted stepfather giving the names as head of household might possibly have had something to do with it. Additionally, when my grandmother was travelling, she missed a flight. My uncle asked the airline to find his mother, "Nellie", and they couldn't find any record of her. It was only when he called my mother to report her missing that she told him her travel documents listed her actual first name, which was Patience! And my brother, christened Leo, is known to all and sundry as "Bill". I don't think any of our cousins are aware that his first name is not actually William.

It seems highly unlikely to me that these are not your family. Clearly it seems the girl's wern't overkeen on their baptised first names, but that's hardly unusual, indeed census's sometimes record a person's nickname nevermind precise baptism names, it all depends what was being used by the family at the time. Similarly an error of a few years comparing actual vs census ages is not unusual, this is quite common for all sorts of reasons.

Their parents' marriage record from this site is:

Elizabeth Susan GITTINGS - B 1887 Staunton - Missing ! (reply)

Hi M P Griffiths

Re last entry -
the 1901 Census shows Elizabeth aged 14 which is correct from 1887.
Also shows her family and young sister Kate, and correct age, all residing at Barn Lane, Corse, Nr Glos. Which seems to confirm the correct line. Have no knowledge in family of a Susanne.

Thanks Forest
