Thanks Graham and slowhands, as I say I am a bit new to this and just didn't want to add things to my tree without doing all I could to verify things. I appreciate the 'possibility' bit but feel a lot happier! I am really grateful for all your help. Jenny

Birth Records Broadwell 1769?? (reply)

So maybe I am barking up the wrong tree and William Gwynne was born Mitchel Troy 1770 and then moved to Broadwell. If you get a minute plse could I beg a favour. Could you take a look at the FamilySearch.org. Do an all resources search for William Gwynne born 1769 England.
I would appreciate your opinion and it may explain why I am not yet convinced that William was born in Mitchel Troy!! Many thanks again for your time.

Birth Records Broadwell 1769?? (reply)

Having just looked at the Newland burial register (not yet online) I have found the burial of a William Gwynne at Broadwell in 1834 which gives his age at deat as 65 years. Since the Ancestry records only gives the year of his birth I would conclude that the researcher has not found a baptismal record, they have just subtracted 65 from the year of death and assumed he was born at the same place.

Birth Records Broadwell 1769?? (reply)

The marriage licences are held at the Gloucester Archives. There is no parish for the Broadwell near Coleford, these records are almost certainly included in the Newland register. Although these are online we are currently updating them from the Parish Clerks records which also cover a number of chapelries in Newland parish.

Birth Records Broadwell 1769?? (reply)

Hi Graham
Thank you so much for taking the time to help with this. I have been in a real quandary about this as I feel as a relative newbie I am challenging someone with vaster experience than me.The researcher has taken this line back to about 1650.

However I want to be sure before adding to my tree and I have this nagging doubt about William Gwynne being born in Mitchell Troy and then marrying Mary Ambery. There is a William Gwynn shown in the Mitchell Troy parish records of 1770 I just am not convinced that it is the same William Gwynne of Broadwell that married Mary Ambery.

If the marriage shows him as being 'of this parish' would it have said that if he had been born in Mitchel Troy, Monmouthshire???
I think those Gwynn's that you found are the same family.

Would I be able to check the licence for this marriage anywhere and are the Parish records for Broadwell available anywhere in a Record Office???
Thanks again
jenny

Birth Records Broadwell 1769?? (reply)

I have done a little research using the parish records and found a baptism of Mary Ambery at English Bicknor on 7 August 1774 daughter of James & Jane.

There is also a marriage of William Gwynne to Mary Ambery at English Bicknor on 18 June 1794, he is described as of this parish. The only Witness was Richard Terrett who is probably the Churchwarden (he is a witness at numerous marriages). The marriage was by Licence, so that is another potential source of information, marriage licences usually give ages and occupations and occasionally parents names.

James Ambery married Jane Haiden at English Bicknor on 10 Feb 1771 also by Licence.

As far as Broadwell is concerned there is a parish in North Gloucestershire and a village near Coleford. The baptisms for this village may have been recorded at Newland, but no Gwynne`s appear there in this timeframe. There are however Gwyn`s in Broadwell in the early 1800s with baptisms of Mary in 1803, Elizabeth in 1806, Thomas in 1809 all to William & Mary, could this be the same family?

Birth Records Broadwell 1769??

Wonder if someone could give advice please with William Gwynne again. Following up on the references that slowhands and Michael found I did an Ancestry search and came up with a connection. This kind person has allowed me access to his extensive research. However.......... on IGI there is an entry for William Gwynne showing his birth as Broadwell, Coleford 1769 and his marriage in English Bicknor 1794, also as slowhands found to Mary Ambury born Broadwell.
The researcher on Ancestry has William Gwynne born 1770 in Mitchel Troy, Monmouthshire , then marrying Mary Ambury 1794.
I suppose what I am asking is, is it possible/likely that there were two William Gwynne's born about the same time, one in Mitchel Troy and the other in Broadwell. I think, if so, it would make sense that Mary Ambury married the Broadwell one. I don't want to add the details to my tree until I am sure. How can I check the Broadwell Baptism records to look for this Broadwell William Gwynne in 1869 please?
Jenny
