Tony Hadland here, just saying thanks again for the past assistance in this research. (My user name on this forum was formerly Merlin but, due to a change of email account, I can no longer use that name.) The talk I'm giving tonight at Kidlington for OFHS continues to develop and has been evolving, as new material comes to light, over the last few years. I've given it several times to various groups and am happy to travel to Gloucestershire to give it. Anybody in the Oxford area is welcome to come along to Exeter Hall, Kidlington, tonight - doors open about 7.15pm and the talk starts at 8.00pm.

Elizabeth YOUNG, 1843 Coleford Oxford Family History talk (reply)

In 1863 she had an illegitimate son, Thomas. Family tradition is that he was conceived while she was working at Lord Raglan's house and that she was paid to 'keep quiet'. This doesn't seem likely to me as she had the boy christened in Raglan (father not known).

Tony Hadland’s talk tomorrow evening ( 20th May 2013) at Exeter Hall, Kidlington, OX5 1AB is titled – “The Duke and the Miner’s Daughter – the fascinating truth behind a Forest of Dean family myth”. Family tradition said that Tony Hadland’s great-grandfather, Thomas Young, was the illegitimate son of the Duke of Raglan. Thomas’s mother was the teenage daughter of a miner in the Forest of Dean. Using techniques anybody can employ, Tony discovered that the truth was even more interesting than the legend.

http://news.ofhs.org.uk/2013/05/19/the-duke-and-the-miners-daughter/
The picture is of Tony’s great-great-grandmother, Elizabeth Young, the subject of the talk.

All are welcome – the venue is open from 7:15pm.

Elizabeth YOUNG, born 1843 Coleford (reply)

Hi Elizabeth

I have a link to the Young family through the Jenkins family of Clearwell

Wood Jenkins who also lived at Palmers flat was a Stonecutter/Quarryowner.

Woods' mother Susannah Jenkins (also nee Jenkins) was the daughter of Walter Jenkins a Farmer at Trealy farm Cwmcarvan. Susannah's sister married a Young from Mitchel Troy.

I have traced the Young family back to William b 1734 Mitchel Troy.

If you are able to confirm the link I will be happy to send you the information I have.

Kind Regards

Mushet, Robert - Servants in his house, Coleford (reply)

Hi, may be of no great matter but Martha Rosser, the cook you refer to, was my GG grandmother and her daughter Lydia (married name Thomas) had boarding with her in Coleford and appearing in the 1881 census a Milson YOUNG born about 1848. May be part of your jigsaw.

It seems that there was, maybe, something of a connection between our families as my grandfather, Edward James ROSSER (1877), had a brother who was born here in NZ after the family came out to NZ and he was named Milson ROSSER(03/09/1879), not exactly a common moniker and the only appearance of that christian name in our family!

Lord RAGLAN 1817 ( in 1861-1871) (reply)

Who was Lord Raglan in 1861-62 ?

Richard Henry FitzRoy Somerset, 2nd Baron Raglan (24 May 1817 - 3 May 1884)

Where was he ?

On 25 September 1856, Lord Raglan had married Lady Georgina Lygon, the third daughter of the 4th Earl Beauchamp and they later had five children. After the death of his wife in 1865, he married Mary Blanche Farquhar, the eldest daughter of Sir Walter Farquhar, 3rd Baronet on 11 October 1871 and they had one daughter.

Lady Raglan abt 1833 Grosvenor Place, London, England Daughter Madresfield, Worcestershire
Arthur Charles E Somersett abt 1860 London, England Grandson Madresfield, Worcestershire
Fitzroy G H Somersett abt 1858 Grosvenor Place, London, England Grandson Madresfield, Worcestershire

Lord Rodan abt 1818 France Head Llandenny, Monmouthshire
Richard Somerset abt 1866 London, England Son Llandenny, Monmouthshire
Granville Somerset abt 1863 London, England Son Llandenny, Monmouthshire
Katherine Somerset abt 1825 London, England Niece Llandenny, Monmouthshire

Cefntilla Court, two miles northeast of Usk, is the family home of Lord Raglan since 1861.
A museum at Cefntilla Court displays a few relics of the Crimean War.
The First Baron Raglan commanded British troops in the Crimea and was responsible
for the Charge of the Light Brigade. He didn't actually join the charge - he observed it through
a telescope from a nearby hill. Those into knitting sweaters would know of 'Raglan sleeves',
and another knitted garment to come out of the war was the balaclava.

Mushet, Robert - Servants in his house, Coleford (reply)

I know Robert Mushet is an important figure in the history of the Forest of Dean.

I am investigating a young lady who shows up on the 1861 Census as a servant in his house - Elizabeth Young. (Martha Rosser was also employed there as the cook.)

Our family tradition is that she became pregnant while employed at Lord Raglan's house and was 'paid off' the keep quiet. This seems unlikely to me as she had the baby (Thomas Young) baptized in Raglan (father unknown). Far more likely she went to Raglan where she was not known to have the baby.

Now Thomas young was born 12 September 1863, so it would be of interest to me to know where she was in December 1862...

She was in the Mushet house in April 1861 - does anyone have any idea how I can find out where she was in December 1862?

John Young 1835 & John Young 1847 (reply)

They appear to be the children of John and Jane Young. I have also found their burial records now. The first Jon was buried age 7 years in 1843, the second John was buried age 7 weeks in 1847.

I notice the first John was baptised on 31 August 1835 and his parents were married on 28 May 1835 - just 3 months before.

Elizabeth YOUNG, born 1843 Coleford

I am researching the YOUNG family. My particular interest is in Elizabeth Young (born 1843) daughter of John Young and Jane (nee Haynes).

Elizabeth had an older brother George (born 1839) and a sister, Ashfield, (born around 1844).

The 1851 census (West Dean) shows John Haynes and Elizabeth (Haynes?) also living with the Young Family, presumably Jane's parents.

Elizabeth was working as a servant in 1861 (CENSUS info) at the Mushett household in Coleford.

In 1863 she had an illegitimate son, Thomas. Family tradition is that he was conceived while she was working at Lord Raglan's house and that she was paid to 'keep quiet'. This doesn't seem likely to me as she had the boy christened in Raglan (father not known).

Elizabeth them married Edwin Capper in 1865. Her son Thomas then became a Capper, but later when he married he changed his surname back to Young.

I am interested in:

1. Tracing the Young family back from John Young

2. Finding out the truth behind the illegitimate Thomas. So it would help to find out where Elizabeth Young was in late 1862 / early 1863. (Thomas was born 12th December 1863).
