Woodside Street / Rd ( Flaxley) Cinderford (reply)

Thanks Slowhands

Yes this is a fantastic site.so much to find !

I was just wondering, How would I find out the correct name of the dwelling,as you say the victorians liked to name their properties rather than number.
Did the post office have a list of dwellings (ie Directory) for the year 1911?
Only I cannot transcribe the house in Woodside Street.
In 1881 all the dwellings were numbered !!!!!

It says Lab . . . . . . y House ,Woodside Street Cinderford

Also does anybody know of the local colliery near to this area

The photo on this site is fantastic so thanks slowhands for this ,It puts how our ancestors lived.

Woodside Street / Rd ( Flaxley) Cinderford (reply)

Had a look along Woodside St. this morning. The only house I could see with an original name (inscribed on the door lintel) is Laburnum House. The only other named house I have knowledge of in Woodside St., it cannot be identified now, is Lansdale House which was the home of Charles and Annie Louisa EVANS who's son Sapper Percival Charles EVANS, Royal Engineers, was killed in WW1.

I might be biassed but I know a VERY good web site :-)

and you are here !!!

In 1901 East Dean Enumeration district 18 the only dwellings identified other than simply in Woodside Rd are Turks Head and Kings Head inns, Belmont Villa, Ty Hafod, Shrubbery Cottage, and the Bakers shop and Grocers shop

< donor of the picture you referred to >
