Hi Martin, I have a copy of John's wedding cert which shows his father as Joseph not Samuel - hence the brick wall I have. There are a few sites with large trees & most of what I have researched agrees with theirs but I have not gone that far back. One of the trees makes a comment about Lilian being known by another name but it's not one I've ever heard of.
Oh well - one day

John SOLLARS 1833 -ish Sheepscombe (reply)

Hi, thanks for replying.
I am, along with another Sollars researcher, trying to compile a Sollars tree that only has people in it that are sourced from parish records or certicates. We have hit a wall with John (abt 1835)who is, I think, father to George & his younger brother John (1874 & my great grandfather) We know on John Sollars & Amelia Worgans wedding certificate (8/11/1855)that John's father is given as Joseph & not Samuel as we first supposed. From research we think therefore that John(1835) must be the son of Joseph & Charlotte Sollars (ne Baylis). The problem is that we can't find a baptism for John around 1835.
I have searched the baptism cd for Gloucestershire 1813-1837 & there is no John as son to Joseph & Charlotte Sollars. However there is a transcribed entry for a John Baylis in 1835 with parents Joseph & Charlotte Baylis & my thought is that just perhaps the surname was miss keyed & the mothers maiden name was entered insteade of her married name during the transcribing.
I have no other ideas.
On the 1841 John Sollars appears with his parents Joseph & Charlotte Sollars. The only way I can prove the 1835 entry theory is by looking at the original parish records which are presumably held at the record office. Unless,by luck, someone out there has actually seen the original entry.
I wouldn't mind sometime cross checking the info I have on George with you if you dont mind
Thanks again for replying,
Marion

John SOLLARS 1833 -ish Sheepscombe (reply)

Thanks for replying. The 1901 family are my g g grandparents, the Henry born 1875 (son of John & Amelia) is my great grandfather. It's a birth/baptism that eludes me. The wedding you have as a possibility is the correct one according to the family bible. The problem is that any tree I have seen(online) for this family has a Samuel as being the father of John where as it would seem to be Joseph. I live in hope that someone somewhere will have the actual dates, very much a waiting game I think.
The trouble with census listings is that they can seem so vague on occasions, that's why I'm looking for an actual birth.
Thankyou for your time & help,
With regards, Marion

Thanks for your prompt reply. I realise that the river "gets it the way" but this John did "go over" after his marriage. My great grandfather lived in Christchurch Nr Coleford which I remember as being close to the Forrest of Dean & I am , with fingers crossed, hoping someone out there researching the same family will have seen John's birth/baptism. I know, via his wedding cert, that his father was Joseph but have no sighting of birth details. I have trawled through a cd of Gloucestershire birth reg 1818-1837 & looked & looked at the civil reg lists to no avail. There are a lot of family trees posted on the internet that have Samuel as being the father of my John but I take my thoughts from the wedding cert .
Thanks again, Marion

Thanks for your prompt reply. I have seen this family in various census reports but , to date, haven't found conformation of a birth/baptism for "my" John. Some years ago, whilst still a novice, I took info from a family tree posted on the webb & "assumed" it to be correct. That was my mistake. These days nothing gets entered without a confirmed source but a lot of people have Samuel as Johns father when I am certain this particular John 's father is Joseph (as seen on John's wedding certificate)
Do you by chance have birth/baptism for the various Johns born around this time? I would be very grateful if you could share this info with me.
with regards, Marion
