Matthew HALE 1834c between 1861 and 1865 (reply)

Hi Dewey. Thank you for your help with my Matthew HALE query. Back in 2003 I wrote to the Genealogical & Historical Room in Washington DC about Matthew HALE in the 42nd Georgia Regiment. This Matthew HALE turned out the be an American, not my Matthew HALE. I have been trying to solve this mystery since 2001. Thanks to Slowhands I think there was time between the April 1861 census and his July 1863 marriage to have served in the US Civil War. I just read over some old notes dated 2001 it says that Matthew HALE was with the Artillery. I am going to have to look into some Artillery Batteries of the South.

At http://www.itd.nps.gov/cwss/ there is a list of Confederate and Union soldiers
I note that there are several named Mathew Hale and one named Matthew Hale for the south (Confederate).

Since Castle Garden was in New York City it is highly unlikely that a Southern Sympathizer would have enterd through that port. If he came to fight for the South I suggest looking at a southern port, such as Charleston, Mobile, New Orleans or the Texas ports.

US Civil War Matthew HALE from Littledean

I was told a story about Matthew HALE from Littledean going to the USA to fight for the South in the US Civil War. The only Mattew HALE I can see being my man is the son of William & Sarah HALE. In the 1861 census Matthew is a widower and age 27. In 1871 he is back and re-married with 4 children. The story is that he was wounded in the war and returned to England. I would like to be able to prove this. Thanks.
