Samuel HEWLETT 1769, Bradley House Ayleford/Soudley (reply)

Samuel Hewlett was born in Whitminster in 1769, moved to the Forest of Dean and married Mary Samuel (b 1775, Newnham) on 9 April 1795, at Newnham. He died on 3 April 1852 at Bradley Hill. There is a monument in the Churchyard at St Andrew's Parish Church, Awre.

Samuel Hewlett designed All Saints, Blakeney. The plans can be accessed at
http://www.churchplansonline.org/

Samuel's brother Daniel Hewlett (1754-1822) designed and built a number of buildings at Frampton-upon-Severn.

Samuel and Mary had 15 children. My husband is descended from his son Samuel (1816-1880) who owned the White Horse at Soudley and died at St White's, Cinderford. Through a great deal of research and the sharing of information with Barbara Lloyd and John Hewlett we have tracked down all his children except the youngest, John Hewlett who was born in 1818 and was beneficiary under his father's Will. Any further information would be gratefully received.

Thank you for your interest, I am getting the papers out again and just checking, but I did notice in one of the Census that there was a "Griffiths" living next door.

I should be able to help you more, but it was 10 years and more ago when I was deep into research of this area and it's inhabitants. Unfortunately, having concluded my family researches of the 19th Century, I have not kept all the notes I had, and the memories have faded.

Evidently, you need to fix the Hewlett family trees from 1768/69 until the 1850's.

Gloucester County Records has an excellent set of documents re. Encroachments 1834. There had been a lot of illegal building over time and the Government decided to legitimize the situation. The result was a series of maps and attached lists of owners and or occupiers linked by numbers. (Q/RGf 1/6) for Blakeney Walk which included Soudley. There were two Samuel Hewlett's Nos. 17 and 27. As far as I can remember, neither was Bradley House. When I first saw the house I reckoned it was 1840's but may be wrong.

Samuel HEWLETT 1769, Bradley House Ayleford/Soudley (reply)

Hello Slowhands

I have been in correspondence with another member of the Board who's family is also related to Samuel Hewlett we have done a lot of research and we would suggest that "Our Samuel" married Mary Samuel at Newnham in 1797. When Samuel died in 1852 George Hewlett & family moved to Bradley Hill (Son). George was living at Soudley in the 1841 and 1851 Census.

I seem to be having problem with access to the Parish Records at the moment, every search I do comes up saying no records found, including the St. Briavel's
marriage records you referred to. Previously I was able to access the 1841 Census. I am obviously doing something wrong. - hence the reference to burning the midnight oil.

Thank you for your interest.

Samuel HEWLETT Iron Master (reply)

Hello Roger

Yes we have corresponded before. Samuel Hewlett's youngest Granddaughter was Julia Hewlett who married William Henry Vaughan who went to America after her Father died. I am still tracking and searching the American side of the family.

The Forest fascinates me. I did not visit it as a child and I am making up for it in my retirement.

Thank you for your interest.

Samuel HEWLETT Iron Master

Hello Barbara,

I think we had correspondence through the RFoDFHS. I think we even met. I did'nt realize you were a Hewlett. Your ancestor was one of the many who made Britain an industrial giant and the most powerful nation since the Roman Empire.

His house is still there. He's mentioned in The Industrial History of Dean by Cyril Hart.
