Brockweir Pirates

While researching my family history of the Jones family from Hewelsfield, I have been told that my ggggf James Jones b.1787 was a bit of a pirate, he would loot the small barges leaving Brockweir on their route to Bristol. I'm told that his father,John, disowned him and removed him from his will.
Was this a common affair and what punishment would they receive if caught?
