Yes there were quite a few regiments.

Thank you again for your help will delve a little further.

I had trouble searching the Gloucester site; if they had the surname seperate or told you which way to search it would be easier. But as his last name is James and I dont know which first name he used, also not all had where they came from, my search was not successfull.

Thanks
Rita

William Howard JAMES b1889 Lydbrook WW1 records (reply)

Hi Rita. According to the medal index there are three men with the name of William H. JAMES. Their regimental numbers are 51955, 1588 & 17311. According to the medal index there were 16 men named William JAMES but only the three with the initial "H". I could't tell much more than that. Sorry. I find it a little more difficult researching British soldiers than the Canadian soldiers of WWI. Remember too that there are quite a few battalions of the Glos. Regiment.

Free Searchable Database - The Gloucestershire Regiment
http://www.glosters.org.uk/

If you cannot find him listed in a Gloucestershire Regiment, It is possible he joined a Hereford Regiment. You will find that many of the young men from the Lydbrook, Cinderford and Ruardean areas joined Hereford Regiments during WW1.

If you want to compare cap badges, take a look at at a photo of my grandfather Albert Watkins b.1892 who was in the 1st Hereford Regiment.

Hi Rita. I found the picture. As far as I can tell it looks like it might be a Gloucestershire Regiment cap badge. It isn't very clear when I enlarge it. If you can please send me a copy of the picture at a high resolution I might be able to make out the cap badge better. I did look at the medal index cards and there are 3 William H. JAMES listed as serving with the Glos. Reg.
