Only in the sense that the marriage of Maria and William was later in 1892 ( after his first wife Jane died) the children are registered as COOK

His wife was Mariah Cooke
Are you thinking the 5 children including Richard Cooke Mansell my Great grandad,may not be Mansells at all.

I'd start with George or William's Birth Cert from GRO... I suspect this is William's child with William's wife Jane at the Workhouse.

hi slowhands,

Thanks (again) for the info above.... I am starting to get confused with Maria Cook/e:

In 1851 she is at home with her parents (Richard and Maria Cooke)

In 1859 she has a child Charlotte Cook

In 1861:

In April (census) William Mansell is living at home with his parents
Charlotte Cook is now with Maria's parents, listed as daughter.
Maria is not at her parents, not at William's and I can't find her anywhere.

In October, William Manselle marries Jane whatever-her-name-was.

In 1871, Maria and 5 children with her surname are living with William Mansell.

Where is Maria in 1861, and how can I tell which children 'belong' to William?

Please help, I'm losing sanity!

Thank you slowhands for providing a continuation thread - much appreciated!

I'm just looking at the 1901 census again, where we have the two different William Mansell entries (which could mean he was enumerated twice I guess)... In one of the census he is living with George and Martha Mansell.. I am trying to find the birth for George Mansell. It says 1868, which ties in with his parish marriage record in 1891, stating he was 23 at the time.

I can't find any birth index (GRO) that corresponds with this. I looked in Herefordshire and Gloucesterhisre, under George Mansell and George Cook - but I can't see anything that corresponds.

Can you see anything I'm missing?
