Ancestry Free Search pages show a Death in 1995 for a Freda Kathleen Roberts in Glos ?? Can also see Kathleen to be a popular Roberts name in C20th Glos.

Also from FreeBMD I find these possible siblings (Robin, after 1911 the Birth Registers recorded mother's maiden names, so easier to search). http://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl

I cannot find an Inquest for Verdun, but infant deaths were far from uncommon then.

Here's a Prior thread wrt Verdun and father Richard George Roberts.
http://www.forum.forest-of-dean.net/index.php?id=24305

The Battle of Verdun thro 1916 didn't generally involve British troops, but the sheer horror of the huge casualties sustained by Britain's French allies meant a lot of British children b1916 were named Verdun in memoriam.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Verdun

-----------------------------------------------------------------

I've also only just found this Prior Thread wrt Emily Cann hence Richard George Roberts. I'm pleased to see my earlier posts have been generally correlated, but far more importantly we know more about Richard's mother Maria.

I'm also pleased to discover why I coudn't find them on the 1901 Census; presumably for reasons associated with their brief London "adventure", Richard & Emily soon returned to Drybrook with a very young Richard George Junior, but were now known as Cinderby if only, presumably, on the Census forms rather than the local community.
Well spotted & thanks for clarifying, Slowhands & Co !

(Robin, you may recall Sarah Cinderby was mentioned by MPG at top of your thread).

See Prior Thread http://www.forum.forest-of-dean.net/index.php?id=23927

Robin, may I recommend you study the website of David Watkins aka "Admin" linked within the above Prior Thread.
http://david.watkins.org.au/cgi-bin/perlged.cgi?method=get&action=display&selec...

It appears Robin that you are distantly related to the founder of this great website who sadly passed away this year.
Please see the post pinned to the top of the Forum Index, David was clearly a great man who we all owe so very much to, thankyou Dave.

Old Maps etc Online (reply)

Hi Rob,
glad you like the links, there's an immense amount of free info available online, try searching using terms such as "Farmington family history" etc etc. Many village sites, not to mention private researchers, have their own sites containing such things as Census information, local history, etc; indeed thats how I stumbled across this FoDFH site. Also try searching this forum, many such sites are highlighted.
Yes the British History site is always worth referencing, I found this thanks to this forum, plus I strongly recommend and regularly use the aforementioned Genuki site too.

I also like and now collect maps, have done since schooldays.
This map website is a favourite of mine as it's easy to navigate across the pages (altho perhaps due to my pc I can't get the map to "enlarge" as it used to by clicking the righthand "bigger map" icon (I'd be gratefull please if anyone can try it themselves, is it just me ??)
http://www.visionofbritain.org.uk/place/place_page.jsp;jsessionid=BFC0A6FD813ED281E8363...

It helps if you have an understanding of the Ordnance Survey maps system and even the reason they were introduced in the early C18th, but not essential by any means.

Thanks again to this forum I also like the Old Maps website, it is more difficult to drive (probably just me) but it is great as it holds many maps for many eras for any given area, it really is very informative and worth serious attention methinks.
www.old-maps.co.uk/maps.html

Ideally enter a modern postcode into the search box, easily found for "new" areas using a search engine (I find many place names are not recognised altho they are on the site's maps. Also some places eg Westbury On Severn, have to be entered "just so" wrt hyphens etc or the computer just says no..., your Bourton is a good example of this !).

Wait for modern map of your area to load, with the search item (postcode) dead centre. If you want to look at somewhere towards the edge of this map, drag it so the chosen area is centred, this can be important to get required map coverage to load.
On the righthand side a dropmenu will list the available maps for your area, in varying scales in chronological order.
Click on the desired map image - main map will be replaced by your chosen old one - be patient as it can take a while to load.
Often the most usefull map (most detail) will be one of the large scale maps eg 1:2500, early OS maps show individual buildings etc etc. I recommend you now select an overall screen zoom setting of abt 200%, such that the framed map image fills your screen yet remains readable. Furthermore, if you click the "spyglass" icon it will then zoom again but with no loss of clarity.

As long as you are able to persuade the site's search engine to load the right map for the area you're hoping to study (postcode is best way !), and you allow time for it to "think" and images to load, this is a truly excellent & most usefull website. However be warned the site can have it's lazy moments, it doesn't like my less-able laptop for example but is fine on my higher powered pc, but it's a free site so I'm not complaining at all !

Finally, there are some companies (including Old Maps) offering excellent downloads or printed paper reproductions of old maps across the whole UK, usually based on the old OS maps, some also to streetplan level. I won't advertise them here, if you're interested I'll happily email you company names or they can found on the usual online shopping/auction sites.

Glad you've found something of interest here, I also hope the Parish Record and Census info is in line with what you hoped for or even already knew - personally if I've got something wrong I'm delighted to be corrected, thanks.

----------------------------------------------------------------

RE Your Point re the Northleach Bypass; I was driving the A40 before the bypass was built and used to stopoff for Friday evening meals at the roundabout? on the western edge of Northleach, probably the one you're thinking of.
Please can you tell me, there used to be a large openair museum there "Countryside Collection" or somesuch, exhibiting old farm wagons etc. However I cannot find it on tinternet, is it still there please ?
I know Bourton from many school trips etc, usually paired with Chedworth Roman Villa; nowadays I occasionally drive thro enroute twixt the Forest and my wife's hometown of Banbury, so usually around Christmas time and often in snow.

Re my earlier post please don't think I was "knocking" the Cotswolds, not at all, I just think wooded & hilly areas like the Forest are more interesting & pleasing on the eye compared to generally flatter rolling farmland, be it in Glorious Glostershire or Italian Tuscany for example.

LEE - Farmington Cotswolds => Dean, ironminer, why ? (reply)

Jeff
If you are driving back to the Forest you would miss Farmington, unless you go into Northleach as the bypass misses Northleach. There should be a sign at the roundabout.
I live in Bourton on the Water which is about five miles away.
You are finding some great links. I like the British history one as there are there is an old map of Bourton.

So looks like Richard and Emily married while both still barely 21 at Paddington, at the end of the GWR, did they run away to have their baby ?. No matter as they lived -out their lives together long afterwards and back in Drybrook too !

Their 1901 Census entry (still in London?) might be interesting, eg Occupation ?.
Sorry cannot find on LDS ?

While searching LDS also found this, could it be Richard Sr ?

LEE - Farmington Cotswolds => Dean, ironminer, why ? (reply)

Thanks M, I was wondering where Farmington was/is !. The earlier post suggested Herefordshire, which I didnt recognise but the name did ring bells in my hollow head, so ??. When I Googled "Farmington Herefordshire" the first of not many hits was intriguing wrt "Bourne" (BourneRob?), however this is probably irrelevant.
http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=135712
[UPDATE: Oops sorry Robin, it's "Bourton" not Bourne, so the above is clearly "irrelevant", ah well. I guess that means you maybe still in the Cotwolds area then and not Birmingham!, my brains fuddled from another late night, sorry for the confusion].

Ah well, trust you to make sense of it all MPG, it's near Northleach north Glos.
http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/GLS/Farmington/Gaz1868.html

I've driven the A40 thro Northleach probably hundreds of times enroute twixt Middlesex & Dean, guess I saw a Farmington signpost ?.
I wonder why Albert found himself moving from a wellknown sheep farming area to become a Dean ironminer ? As much as the Cotswolds are beautiful, areas such as Northleach can be very harsh, windswept and snowbound in the wintertime - I know I'm biased but I fully agree with his moving to Dean ;-)
Knowing Annie's home the Lea as I do I presume he was still in the farming business when he met her, perhaps via the GWR at Longhope ?.

Then again I see Farmington also has a long history of stone quarrying, perhaps that was Albert's skills, so very akin to Drybrook with it's quarrying and local iron mining too ?.

"The lord of the manor leased a stone quarry on the common downs at Farmington to two Northleach masons in 1634, and a quarry or 'mine' was recorded on the Fyfield family's estate in 1639. The principal quarry in the parish was later the Foss quarry, which was opened before 1707 beside the Foss way at the north-west boundary. It was probably an area where stone had long been dug in many small pits, for the part of the open fields adjoining the quarry on the south was known as the Diggings. The Foss quarry, where the old extensive workings had been closed and replaced by new ones to the south before 1882, was leased to a Farmington mason Caleb Joynes from the mid 19th century. He was succeeded there before 1876 by Stephen Joynes who worked as a mason in Farmington until the early 1930s, presumably still leasing the quarry. The owners of the estate, the Barrow family, took the quarry in hand before the Second World War and worked it subsequently on its own account. From 1991 Capt. J. J. D. Barrow made it his principal enterprise, modernizing the equipment and expanding the business. In 1999, when 70 people were employed there, including 15 qualified stonemasons, the business had two main branches, the supply of building stone, including ashlar and rubble walling stone, flagstones, and architectural dressings, and the production of a range of fireplaces in traditional styles."

Date accessed: 25 October 2012.

There is still a Farmington Natural Stone company in the area.

Hope my muses are of interest, thanks again M !

Annie ROBERTS nee CLOSE, Drybrook (reply)

Searching Ida & Cecil's mother Annie Roberts nee Close:
Judging from this site's PRs Annie is a very popular Roberts name, but I believe this is our Annie (NB father is William as per Marriage Record);

NB: This site also contains Baptism & Burial PRs for Annie Elizabeth Close, born Drybrook abt the same time & to father William, however I think her Marriage record rules her out of this "equation".

-----------------

As per MPG's earlier 1901 Census post, Samuel Paul Roberts' father was George Roberts "aged 73".

From this site's PRs:

This site has several more Wills re Drybrook area Roberts, worth closer searching ?

So confirming it was at Holy Trinity Church, aka the important "Forest Church", on what was then called Harry, now Harrow Hill.
This site has three "photos" of the Church, note the first is from an old book available to read on this site.
http://www.forest-of-dean.net/gallery/churches/pages/page_21.html

I cannot find any local Baptism records for Albert & Ida's children on any free site. Did they leave the area ?. Searching UK wide on FreeBMD gives this possible firstborn son, is "Bourne" aka Bourneville in Birmingham relevant I wonder, Robin ?.

Surname First name(s) Mother District Vol Page

[UPDATE: Oops sorry Robin, it's "Bourton" not Bourne isn't it, so the above is clearly irrelevant, ah well. I guess that means you're maybe still in the Cotwolds area not Birmingham, rather a different "model village"!, sorry].

So searching FreeBMD in North Glos gives these more likely births:

ROBERTS of Drybrook and surrounding area (reply)

Hi Robin,
A warm welcome to this great website and forum !
Please don't forget the site carries so much more than "just" a massive database of PRs and a helpful forum. There are also old documents such as inquests & wills, old photos, maps, newspaper cuttings, e-books etc etc, please take the time to browse thro them you may well find something of family interest. Also don't forget you can search them all fairly easily, for example I've just found this very informative prior thread from this forum which I'm sure refer to your Roberts ancestors.

That said, please note the Moses Roberts whose will is mentioned is not the same one as MPG posted above in your line, there were several all in Drybrook or the immediate area such as Ruardean, Ruardean Hill, Harry (now called Harrow) Hill and so on.
Happy Hunting !

http://www.forum.forest-of-dean.net/index.php?id=32513

ps please check your inbox for some hopefully interesting info re old photos.
Jeff
