David,

Here is what I have on Conrad's mother, and on Conrad himself. Sorry for repeating in part what people have already told you, but I am too pressed for time to edit this.

David,

On baptism, Eliza Malson, daughter of George Malson of The Hawthorns, mason, and mother
recorded as EZ.

Prior to her marriage, Eliza had an illegitimate child, Conrad, the imputed father being obe MArtin Perkins as follows:

Gloucester Citizen 29 May 1886
LITTLEDEAN PETTY SESSIONS.
Yesterday. -Before Messrs. E. Crawshay and A.
Thomas.
Eliza Malsom summoned Martin Perkins to show cause
why he should not contribute towards the maintenance
of her illegitimate child, of which she alleged he was the
father - Mr. Whatley on a previous occasion appeared
for the defendant who desired to call "material witnesses,"
the case being adjourned in consequence, but neither
defendant nor his witnesses now appeared. -Complainant
said she lived at Nailbridge. Her child was born on
September 9th, 1885, and Perkins was the father of it.
He had promised to her father and mother to " send for
her when he was in work." She never bad any letters
from him. - Elizabeth Malsom, mother of the plaintiff,
said that at different times Perkins came to their house
and told the girl's father to "take care of her and not let
anyone interrupt her." He then "took his hook." -The
defendant was ordered to pay 3s. 6d. a week until the child
(a boy) reached the age of 13 years, and the costs.

Eliza had an earlier illegitimate child. Thomas Barnard Malson, listed as Cooper at the 1891 census, below.

On marriage, Eliza, 25, spinster of Haywood, daughter of George Malson, mason, and Thomas Cooper, 27, bachelor, miner of Mitcheldean, son of Enoch Cooper, publican deceased. After banns. Witnesses David Malson (her brother), Ruth Malson (David's wife).

MALSON Levi, at sister Eliza & Thos Cooper's, early 1892 (reply)

Hi Jeff,

Had a lovely trip to Wales taking in Llyn Brianne and the surrounding area, absolutely fantastic. No need to apologise, I had already thought some of them were a rum lot!!

Thanks for the heads on the BNA site. I'll have a root round and if I need further assistance I'll be back in touch.

Thanks again for all your help. Best wishes, David

MALSON Levi, at sister Eliza & Thos Cooper's, early 1892 (reply)

Hi David,
hope you had a good trip to Wales.
Sorry for advertising the rowdy behaviour of the Malsons, thanks for not taking it too personally, they endured very different times of course, especially if literally on the breadline. Sadly, for the majority of us, the only mentions our kin got in the local papers were Court cases etc, to my surprise and my mother's horror even my highly respected and "angelic" family-man grandfather was a bit of a yob in his youth ! My own connection with the Ruardean Hill area is thro' my brother-in-law, a Coleman/Roberts. I get the impression from his stories, and then my researches for him, that just as the Forest seemed somewhat "wild" to outsiders, similarly "Ruddn'ill" is a little "wilder" to the surrounding Forest area, maybe it's all that fresh air up there ;-)

Apologies for thinking you had BNA access, it was your opening post that made me think that.
I am happy, of course, to download and email you the items I've mentioned, altho you may well need to remind me !. In the meantime, the BNA site is actually available to you to use for free all this weekend if you want to, see the FindMyPast offer I've just posted about. If you search "MALSOM Drybrook" etc, using the area filters to ensure fastest hits, then you should be able to find them all.

atb Jeff

Hi Jeff,

Sorry not to have got back to you sooner, been away in deepest Wales for a long w/end.

Unfortunately I don't have access to the BNA but I am grateful for the information you have so kindly sent through, it is greatly appreciated. Birth years and dates have caused a problem in the past and I know from other Malson(m) family researchers some were a rum lot.

I would be grateful for further information if it's not too much trouble.

Best regards, David

MALSON Levi, at sister Eliza & Thos Cooper's, early 1892 (reply)

Hi again David,
am I correct in thinking you have access to the British Newspapers Archive ?. If you do, then I expect you've already seen that Levi was in court on 6th February 1892. The article states he was lodging with his sister Eliza & her husband Thos Cooper, they had a rather unpleasant argument about rents, and mother Elizabeth gave corroborative evidence.
As with the earlier items, it's clear that these years were not kind to the unfortunate family, the same "Malsom, Drybrook" search also found this;

Gloucester Journal - Saturday 28 September 1878

"Littledean Police Court.
Levi Malsom, a boy, of Drybrook, was charged with stealing a tin of preserved fruit, value 1s. 3d., the property of Emanuel Smith, grocer. The prisoner, who could not say his age, but whose age was subsequently stated to be sixteen years, and who could not read or write, was sent to prison for seven days."

The same search also finds a few mentions c1880-1890 of an Oliver Malsom at the Petty Sessions, who enjoyed his beer, much like some of my ancestors who lived in the same Ruardean Hill/Drybrook area.
I expect you've already seen this old thread about Oliver, born abt 1850, sorry for not spotting it sooner.
http://forum.forest-of-dean.net/index.php?id=22180

There is also an extensive article concerning the 25th January 1913 Inquest at Gloucester of Charles Malsom Bannister, 49, a mason of Harry Hill, who died after an accident while working at Cannop Colliery; looks like one of the family ?.
Hard to be sure given the name spelling variations, but I cannot find this Inquest within this site's database. I do see that Levi and George are among various Malsoms attending Drybrook area Inquests within this site's records. The newspapers also carry this Inquest in which Levi was a key witness, December 1898.

If you don't have BNA access I'll happily download and email you the relevant items.
Hoping this helps you with your researches, Jeff.

"At the invitation of the Greek Prime Minister, M.Venizelos, Salonika (now Thessalonika) was occupied by three French Divisions and the 10th (Irish) Division from Gallipoli in October 1915. Other French and Commonwealth forces landed during the year and in the summer of 1916, they were joined by Russian and Italian troops. In August 1916, a Greek revolution broke out at Salonika, with the result that the Greek national army came into the war on the Allied side.
The town was the base of the British Salonika Force and it contained, from time to time, eighteen general and stationary hospitals. Three of these hospitals were Canadian, although there were no other Canadian units in the force.
The earliest Commonwealth burials took place in the local Protestant and Roman Catholic cemeteries. Salonika (Lembet Road) Military Cemetery (formerly known as the Anglo-French Military Cemetery) was begun in November 1915 and Commonwealth, French, Serbian, Italian and Russian sections were formed. The Commonwealth section remained in use until October 1918, although from the beginning of 1917, burials were also made in Mikra British Cemetery. After the Armistice, some graves were brought in from other cemeteries in Macedonia, Albania and from Scala Cemetery, near Cassivita, on the island of Thasos.
There are now 1,648 Commonwealth servicemen of the First World War buried or commemorated in this cemetery. The Commonwealth plot also contains 45 Bulgarian and one Serbian war graves."

Gloucester Journal of Saturday 15th July 1916;

"FORESTERS’ ROLL OF HONOUR
The recent casualty lists have contained the names of several more Forest boys who have fallen in the great war. Official information has been received by Mr. and Mrs. Levi Malsom. Bilson Green, Cinderford, of the death of their son, Pte. Christopher Malsom (26), which occurred as tbe result of a bombing accident on June 16th. The young man was a collier at Ligbtmoor, and latterly worked in South Wales, where on the outbreak of war he joined the South Wales Borderers. He was selected from the Battalion to be a grenadier, so Captain John England writes to the distressed parents, and was looked upon as one of the most reliable bombers.
News of the death of Pte. Theo Gabb. son of Mr. William Gabb, has been received in Cinderford. The War Office had notified Mr. Gabb that his son was missing, and later letter has come from an officer of the battalion saying it was his sad dutv to report the expected death of the soldier in question. “He was,” the writer says, "carrying out some very gallant work and was badly wounded. Every night since the accident search had been made, but no trace of the brave bugler was found.” The loss of this son is particularly sad, as on September 25th, 1915, another son, Dennis, of the Gloucesters, lost bis life.
The news of a double bereavement of the family of Mr. and Mrs. George Edwards, of Buckshaft, Ruspidge, has also fallen heavily upon the whole neighbourhood, when a letter came announcing that two sons of Mr. and Mrs. Edwards had been killed in action. Two comrades sent the distressing news, and said that Alec (who was nearly 21) was killed by a bullet through the head. The following evening his brother Arthur also met his death through a piece of shrapnel striking his bend. Both deaths were instantaneous. Both soldiers were highly respected in the district, being faithful members of the Wesleyan Sunday School and Band of Hope, also members of the Rechabite Order. The younger boy worked at Lightmoor, and the elder was employed in forestry.
A letter from the captain has been received by Mrs Cooper, Bilson Green, telling her that her son, Pte. William John Cooper, who enlisted on June 7th, 1915, in the Gloucestershire Regiment, was struck down while executing a brilliant piece of work. He did his duty well, and died as a Britisher. The officer expressed the hope that Mrs. Cooper would be given strength to bear the blow, knowing that his life was not wasted, but given to his country to leave it a better place than he found it.
Mrs. Hancock. of the Bell Inn. Littledean, received intimation that her brother, Pte. Owen Williams, had been killed in action, but a further report states he is missing.
We also learn than Pte. Harry Thynne. St. Briavels, of the Gloucestershire Regiment, is reported wounded in the arm, and is in hospital at Chatham. Pte. Harold Havward, of the A.S.C.. is also badlv wounded in the eyes, and is being treated at Leeds."

Little Dean Petty Sessions, 1889 wood theft (reply)

Hi David, you're welcome.

It looks like the same family group to me, clearly they were enduring very hard times, struggling to get food or firewood. Looking at some of the original PRs entries on Ancestry, very easy to see why the handwritten Malson, Melson and Milson have been mistranscribed as well as mis-recorded, but not MalsoMs etc.

Looking thro the PRs shows Elizabeth is an oft-used Milson/Melson/Malson name, but I can only find one David; his parents' details seem correct, here are his family's Baptisms;

Year Parents_Surname Child_Forenames Fathers_Forenames Mothers_Forenames Mothers_Surname Residence Occupation Parish_Chapel

1861 MALSON David, George & Elizabeth, Hawthorns, Mason, Drybrook
1864 MALSON Levi, George & Elizabeth, Hawthorns, Stone Mason, Drybrook
1866 MALSON Eliza, George & EZ, The Hawthorns, Mason, Drybrook,
1868 MALSON Elizabeth, George & Elizabeth, Drybrook Mason, Drybrook
1876 MALSON Mark Edward, George & Elizabeth, The Morse, Stone Mason, Drybrook

So David born 1861, so aged 15 when described as a "boy" caught with his mother in 1878.

GlosBMD gives this Marriage;
Groom Surname Groom Forename Bride Surname Bride Forename District Parish Building Year Register Entry
MALSON George JONES Elizabeth Forest of Dean Drybrook Holy Trinity 1860 1 260
MALSON George BANNISTER Elizabeth Forest of Dean Drybrook Holy Trinity 1860 1 260

The full PR shows George is a Mason of the Hawthorns (ie Drybrook Quarry), both are Widows

------------

The mother Eliza of the following births is the above-mentioned daughter of George and Elizabeth, so David's younger sister. My post showing her marriage to Thos Cooper shows David as a witness, he was 29yrs then.

Year Parents_Surname Child_Forenames Fathers_Forenames Mothers_Forenames Mothers_Surname Residence Occupation Parish_Chapel
1885 MILSON Conrad, [not stated], Eliza, Nailbridge, [not stated], Drybrook
1889 MALSON Thomas Barnard, [not stated], Eliza, Haywood Lane, Drybrook

HOWEVER as well as the above Baptisms there are several Malson Burials abt this time in this same Micheldean/Abenhall & nearby Drybrook areas, some of which from our Drybrook branch of what I suspect is the same extended family;

Year Month Day Surname Forenames Residence Age_at_death Parish_Chapel
1867 Aug 31 MALSON Hannah, Haywood Lodge 66 Drybrook
1874 Apr 5 MALSON Mark #, The Hawthornes 30 Drybrook
1876 Sep 7 MALSON Mark Edward, Morse Lane 6 months Drybrook

# Mark Malson dies aged 30, the year after witnessing sister Maria's marriage(below).
Ref PR and GlosBMD, Mark is son of George & MARY Malson nee Budding, in Abenhall.

Birth Details
Child Surname Child Forename Father Surname Mother Surname Mother's Former Name Year District Office Register Entry
MALSON Mark MALSON MALSON BUDDING 1842 Forest of Dean Westbury on Severn, Newnham 4 201

The 1889 wood theft case includes married woman Maria Phillips, as well as Eliza and Elizabeth Malson - (says they reside at Cinderford but this is very near Drybrook and much bigger/main town, standard newspaper style).
Maria Phillips is Elizabeth & George Malson's daughter;

Little Dean Petty Sessions (reply)

This as well,

BNA Gloucester Citizen Saturday 29 May 1886

LITTLEDEAN PETTY SESSIONS, yesterday,

Eliza Malsom summoned Martin Perkins to show cause why he should not contribute towards the maintenance of her illegitimate child, of which she alleged he was the father. Mr Whatley on a previous occasion appeared for the defendant who desired to call “material witnesses” , the case being adjourned in consequence, but neither defendant nor his witnesses now appeared. Complainant said she lived at Nailbridge. Her child was born on September 9th 1885, and Perkins was the father of it. He promised to her father and mother to “send for her when he was in work”. She never had any letters from him. Elizabeth Malsom, mother of the plaintiff, said that at different times Perkins came to their house and told the girl’s father to “take care of her and not let anyone interrupt her”. He then “took his hook”. The defendant was ordered to pay 3s 6d a week until the child, a boy, reached the age of 13 years, and the costs.

Hi Chris,

As far as I know Conrad's mother was Eliza Malson and I think he was born out of wedlock. I understand the Hearing was for maintenance of child and I have assumed this was Conrad as she had no others out of wedlock.

Eliza went onto marry Thomas Cooper in 1890.

Little Dean Petty Sessions (reply)

Hi David

I have never come across one of these cases where the child has been named.
It is usually the mother and reputed father who are mentioned. Do you know who the mother was please?

Regards
Chris

Conrad lies at St Sever Cemetery, Rouen, France;

"During the First World War, Commonwealth camps and hospitals were stationed on the southern outskirts of Rouen. A base supply depot and the 3rd Echelon of General Headquarters were also established in the city.
Almost all of the hospitals at Rouen remained there for practically the whole of the war. They included eight general, five stationary, one British Red Cross, one labour hospital, and No. 2 Convalescent Depot. A number of the dead from these hospitals were buried in other cemeteries, but the great majority were taken to the city cemetery of St. Sever. In September 1916, it was found necessary to begin an extension.
St. Sever Cemetery contains 3,082 Commonwealth burials of the First World War. There is also 1 French burial and 1 non war service burial here."

There is only one MALSON currently in this site's WW1 Servicemen database, looks a different man as below, so please could Admin consider adding Conrad ?;

CARDIFF TIMES of 1st June 1878

"LITTLEDEAN PETTY SESSIONS.
IMPUDENT THEFT OF BUTTER.—Elizabeth and David Malson, mother and boy, residing at Cinderford, were charged with stealing half a Ib of butter, value 7d the property of Edwin Long. The parties called at Mr Long's shop and asked for relief, representing that they were in great distress owing to the stoppage of works in the neighbourhood of Cinderford. Mrs Long left the shop to get them food, and meanwhile they "lifted" the butter. It was missed on their leaving the shop. Sergeant Swatton, who was sent in pursuit, found the butter in the woman's possession. She had also a basket of provisions - bread, butter, cheese, &c.—weighing 17 Ibs. The justices sent prisoner to gaol for two months."
