William MOULTON, Sarah WATKINS (reply)

I´m a bit slow, but I´m getting there.

William Moulton & Sarah Watkins married 9 July 1843 at St Mary´s in Penterry.

William´s parents, William Moulton & Sarah Moulton nee Jones married 26 December 1808 at St Nicholas's in Trelleck. Witnesses were her sister Mary Jones & John Hoskins.

Sarah Jones was baptised 29 May 1785 at St Mary´s in Penterry by parents Philip Jones & Sarah Jones nee ?

Any help with the William Moulton/Molton who married Sarah Jones would be much appreciated. All I have is a possible birth of Abt. 1785 & a possible burial of 20 December 1869 in Llandogo, death was noted as 84 years old.

I think it is this William & Sarah who witnessed his sister (?) Mary Moulton´s (b. Abt. 1780 in Llandogo) illegitimate son George Moulton (baptised 29 July 1804 Trelleck - A base child) when he married his 2nd wife Ann Mason 2 February 1846 at St Dochoe´s in Llandogo.

Thanks, Martin

The Parrot Inn, Hewelsfield. (reply)

Just to fill in one little gap!

My 2nd Cousin who retains the name Moulton is only (possibly) related through an illegitimate son of Edward Lewis Moulton & a woman named Elizabeth BROWN. Elizabeth was baptised 11 May 1862 in Kilgwrrwg. Elizabeth was the daughter of James Brown & Margaret Brown nee REECE, who married 1859 somewhere near Itton.

At conception she was probably still working (1881 Census) as Housemaid (Servant), working for William A Shoolbred (General Practicioner M.R.C.S.E. F.City F.L.S.) & George F Jackman (Surgeon M.R.C.S.E.) both single men & partners in a medical practice at Bridge Street, Chepstow.

Elizabeth Brown gave birth to a son Ernest Lewis BROWN & he was born 5 Dec 1882 in Torquay. Elizabeth later married Albert Charles MILLER 1887 in Wells, Somerset. In following Census reports Edward Lewis Brown is shown as Edward Miller.

Edward Lewis Brown married Elizabeth Watson on 25 Dec 1906 at Ravenstone, Leicestershire. Edward married under the name Edward Lewis Brown Miller. On his mother Elizabeth´s deathbed, she told him his father was a Moulton. He obviously took heed, as his first born he named Leslie Lewis Moulton who was born 13 Nov 1907 in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire . . . and the rest follow being named Moulton, as such did he & he died a Moulton.

The Parrot Inn, Hewelsfield. (reply)

Hi I´m new to this Forum & am trying to help my 2nd Cousin with his MOULTON Family Tree. Theophilus MOULTON´s father Edward Lewis MOULTON married Elizabeth PRICE on 31 Dec 1862 St Mary's Church, St Briavels. Edward Lewis MOULTON was baptised 30 Jun 1844 Siloam Baptist Chapel.Edward´s parents being William MOULTON who had married Sarah WATKINS on or around July 1843, I think it was at Trelleck, but have not found any records.I think Sarah was about 19 years old when she married William. I think that she was baptised 21 Apr 1824 St Nicholas´s Church, Trelleck, her father would therefore be George WATKINS & her mother was Mary. I have a William MOULTON who is buried 31 Mar 1878 at St Dochoe's Church, Llandogo. William was aged 60 years old living at Botany Bay, Trelleck when he died. This date would be about right as his wife Mary is shown in the 1881 Census as "Living with daughters Prina & Annie & son Neamiah" & the 1891 Census as Living with daughter Perina (Prina) & son in law James PARRY & their son Willie, granddaughter Lousia Moulton (b. Abt. 1880 Monmouthshire) at Trelleck Road, Little Tintern.

My main problem is finding William Moulton´s birth/baptism & parents etc. Given his proposed death, he would have been born about 1818. There is a William being baptised 4 Oct 1818 in Trelleck by parents William & Sarah Moulton nee JONES? (married 26 Dec 1808 Trelleck by Banns). In the Census reports 1851, 1861 & 1871 he is shown as being born 1819 to 1820.

As the MOLTON / MOULTON´s seemed to move between Monmouthshire & Gloucestershire, with a change in spelling of surname has had me going in circles. Any help would be much appreciated.

Martin

The Parrot Inn, Hewelsfield. (reply)

Hi Gordon

I have been doing research on the Williams family.

My great-grandmother, was Ellen Williams, born at Tidenham in 1859,the daughter of Luke Williams and his wife, Sarah Vaughan.

Ellen had a sister Mary, who I believe was the wife of Nehemiah Moulton. Since Mary was your great aunt, I assume you are descended from one of Ellen's brothers,Thomas(Tom) or Henry (Harry).

Ellen married a schoolteacher called Joseph Lloyd in Bristol in 1881. They settled in Chepstow and had 3 sons and a daughter. In 1889/1890 the family moved to South Africa. Joseph taught at village schools in the Eastern Cape over the next few years and in 1892, they had a fifth child called Mary Latham Vaughan Lloyd. Round about 1896 Ellen and her youngest daughter separated from the rest of the family and I have been unable to find out what happened to her or her daughter Mary, who is referred to as "Polly" by older family members.

Do you know anything about Ellen? Did she perhaps return to England, with or without her daughter and did she possibly go and stay with any of the other members of her family?

I would be grateful for any information you might have about Ellen.
Kind regards
Kay

The Parrot Inn, Hewelsfield. (reply)

Hello Griff,

Cant help you of the occupants after the 1920s. Just to say that in 1895 my father was born in The Parrot Inn and a few months after my grandfather died there. It was then kept by my great aunt and uncle - Nehemia & Mary Moulton.
Somewhere I have various references to the publicans which kept it up to the time it was closed. I think I Googled for that info.
If you find anything about The Parrot I would be most interested. Presumable the deeds of the house would be a good start, if the present owners are approachable.
