Thanks to all who replied I may have had a bit of a breakthrough today with the will of Jonathan Wintle ... these who suggested Jonath was abbreviation were correct. Looks like he died aroun 1731.

At the time of his will there are 4 remaining children that I can see Richard and Jonathan sons and Abigail and Sarah daughters and his wife Sarah. I'm fairly sure it's him as at the bottom of the will is an added bit about his daighter Abigail who's now married to Robert Newton. So another piece of the puzzle I think might be solved.

Thank you I shall go check and see if that's what I have too ... ok so Jonath is most likely abreviation for Jonathan. It can be so confusing especially when in the same family they will have one son John and then one Jonathan!

Thank you! I appreciate the help as I'm worried I'm going to mix them up and have someone else's John or Jonathan.

My sisters in laws live in Newent and so she's lucky enough to return there every couple of years. Before we new just how far back our family goes there she said she always feels she's at home when there :-)

Thank you for your reply ... I've worked quite a lot out for Abigail and the Good/Goode part. I know also she had a daughter Mary Ann which took me a bit to sort as she married Thomas Good and when they died I found their children staying with different family members. Her eldest son Edward is married at this stage to Eve Gower, whom I'm actually related to as well as her grandmother Prudence Gower née Moore is sister to George Moore (one of the George's that drown and father to Edward Moore) so on the 1861 census for Eve it has two of Edwards younger brothers staying with her. In same year I find Mary Ann their sister with Margaret Grimes wife of John Grimes. I disciover only yesterday that John Grimes was illegitimate child of Mary Ann Good née Grimes. So it all makes sense now. I just couldn't work out the the Wintle and Newton families mainly because of all the John,Jonathan and Jonath's. and wondered if someone else may have connections to these families as I'm worried I will mix them up :-)

I agree with Chris on this one. It’s an abbreviation for Jonathan/Jonathon etc.

There are these baptisms recorded at Westbury and they seem to make a family,

I read it as Jonath

There is enough doubt on the Ancestry PR images to allow for all of these transcriptions. In general the scribe uses abbreviations even when there would be enough room for the full name.

I'm hoping to get some help unpick a few of my ancestors from these two families. They are giving me quite the headache.

I only recently discovered with some professional help my Moore family tree my 4 x great grandfather being Edward Moore born 1792 to George and Abigail Moore née Newton. Edward Moore died at age 30 after he was killed in a boxing match and I've recently found out his grandfather, father and brother (all called George Moore) were all drowned in the river Severn in 1797 when their barge the Betsey took on water during a gale. So I've been following up on Abigail Newton she remaries Moses Grimes after her husband and Edwards father George drowned. From what I can see from baptisms for some if her children she was daughter of Jonathan and Elizabeth Newton from Westbury on Severn. Jonathan Newton (I think) was son of Robert and Abigail Newton née Wintle. I've found a birth record for Abigail Wintle born 1701 in Westbury on Severn to a Jonath and Sarah Wintle. At first I thought this was an error I thought it must have been Jonathan but sure enough there are more children to Jonath and Sarah. But there are so many John, Jonathan's etc that I thought I'm getting to get this so mixed up so I thought I might see if anyone is more familiar with this family and if they had come across a Jonath?

I've then come down from Edward Moore via Harriet Moore her mother being Elizabeth Harvey. Harriet marries Charles Clark a timber merchant, their daughter Amelia has a son known to us as Ted Clark he was her illegitimate son and he and his family's including my grandfather came to Australia after First World War.

Many thanks and I hope I haven't confused anyone. My tree is on ancestry.

Mary Anne 13/03/1803, Moses and Abitha
Sarah 20/10/1805, Moses and Abigail
Hannah 27/03/1808, Moses and Abigail

Since Mary Anne neatly fits the pattern I think Abitha must be Abigail although the BT certainly reads Abitha.

Hi all from west Australia ... I came across this post when just doing some research into my family tree which I've been working on now since April last year. I recently got some help from Gloucestershire family history as I was stuck in particular with my 4 x great grandfather Edward Moore a waterman/bargemaster/mariner depending on what record you were looking at. He married Elizabeth Harvey and they had 3 daughters, Harriet Moore was my 3 x great grandmother and she married Charles Clark a timber merchant. His brother George marries her half sister Sophia and at one point they also live in Newent so have another tie there. Anyway Edward Moore died at 30 it turns out he died in a boxing match in 1822. His grandfather, father and brother all named George Moore drowned along with an Isaac Ball in 1797 when their barge the Betsey sank after taking on water during a gail. Edwards mother was Abigail Moore née Newton who after her husband George Moore died she married Moses Grimes. I've since been trying to work out what children she had with Moses and came across the baptisim of Mary Ann and although transcript says Abitha I did wonder if it could be Abigail as it's quite difficult to read and I can not find any such person as Abitha.

Although these posts were some years ago I'm hoping the lady from West Australia is still a member as too am from here and it's quite possible if this was Abigail my 5 x great grandmother we could be distantly related.

As a youngster I used to row on Gloucester canal. My Dad was R.M. and I was in WRNS,the water connection seems to be well and truly there!
Actually WA is only 8 hours ahead.....Eastern states 3 hr ahead of us! (or 30 years ahead as they like to think!)

I have been hung up on this Mary Gainer bit for couple of years now.
I have Elizabeth Goode's birth cert. copy, and it looks like Gainer, but so easily could be Grimes (and much more likely!).
I'm a mermber of WAGS (Western Australia Gen. Socty. and we've all read this cert. the same way! Egging one another along I guess!
I'm hoping to revisit UK in 2013, so a visit to Gloucester Archives a definite on my bucket list!. Thank you both so much.

Elizabeth Goode born Saul 28 Jan 1838 married my G. Grandfather, George Hyett in Framilode 19 Nov 1856.
Elizabeth's father given as Thomas Goode, a waterman, mother Mary Gainer.
I have no further details, would really appreciate any info.
