1911 Census - R V JONES (reply)

I suppose it does make sense. If Rose House was born in Clevedon, she would have had her illegitimate daughter Annie back across the river, rather than where she was in service, in Glamorgan. Further, such an un-welcome occurrence would have then taken place away from even that home!! How times have changed - probably for the better - since it's hardly the child's fault. It would be interesting to dig into the Jones family in Glamorgan. I'm wondering if Rose was in service actually in the Jones' Glamorgan household. It would have been the classic indiscretion on the part of a son of that household.

More and more fascinating!

Annie niece of Robert Vernon JONES Blistors Farm, Bream (reply)

I was most interested to see SunGreen's upload of Vernon Jones' Shire horse, the more so when the FoD Family History posts were notified to me by Peter Essex - my 3rd Cousin!

The birth dates, locations and marriage for Vernon and his wife, plus her maiden name were unknown to me, so I was delighted to at last add these jigsaw pieces. However, it is time to correct the historical record, over a century having passed!!

The 1901 Census reflects some sensibilities in terming Annie Jones as a niece. She was actually Robert Vernon Jones's illegitimate daughter by Rose House. It was, to my mind, exceedingly unusual that the erring father stepped up to raise his child. What Annie Beatrice Jones's thoughts were are lost to history.

Annie, my maternal grandmother, styled herself as Annie House Jones, which I now assume must have been in later life. I've never seen her wedding certificate, which doubtless vanished to the Dark Continent with Annie H. Pritchard's eldest son, my uncle, who was also Robert Vernon, but a Pritchard, of course. My mother, Violet (never used!) Mary Pritchard was Annie's second child.

My grandmother did eventually meet her real mother, who had married James Barrow. Sadly, the circumstances and timing of that were never imparted to me. If she & James Barrow had descendants, then they're my blood relatives. It would be pleasing to close the loop, though quite what the genealogical terms might be, I've yet to work out!!

Robert Vernon JONES 1869-1950 Blistors Farm, Bream (reply)

Robert Vernon Jones was a relative of mine - just. He was the father of Annie House Jones who married William Edward Ernest Pritchard on 6 October 1919, the wedding group being depicted at Blistors. John Frederick Pritchard, the bridegroom's father, ran the Lydney Coal Company and was one of the numerous siblings of my great-grandmother Clara Ann who married Henry Sterrey.

Robert Vernon Jones is also said to have been the village butcher at Bream. He was certainly the founder of the Vernon Lodge of the Royal Antediluvian Order of Buffaloes who met at the Cross Keys, Bream.

W E E Pritchard and Annie nee Jones went to live in Oxford Street, Lydney. Annie then ran a guest house on behalf of John Watts at Rosemont, Lydney High Street, now flattened for the glory that is Tesco's.

According to Kelly's Directory for 1879, Blistors was in the hands of one William James, mine agent. On 26 November 1900, there was a marriage at Bream of Samuel Robbins and Elizabeth Emma Hoare, both said - by the parish magazine - to have been of Blistors. A 1976 photo shows Blistors derelict.

I am indebted to Roger Dennis for most of this information. Searching "Blistors" on www.sungreen.co.uk reveals even more.

http://www.sungreen.co.uk/_bream/Buffs1949.htm

I have just received from my Cousin, my Great Grandad's Work Log, listing many local names around Blakeney, from 1891 'ti; 1903 (by which time his eye sight was failing). e.g. Nov 19 1893, Lent Mr Thos. KIRBY - £2 - Killed Ox for Mr JONES, Two Bridges.

In this log, is a lovely leaflet, dated 1913 with a picture of a Shire Horse (Finstall Sultan) - the property of Vernon Jones, Blistors, Bream, Glos - Stud fee £2.2s. or Farmer's Unregistered Mares £1 10s. - Groom's Fee 2s 6d. (with a write-up inside the leaflet)

I've sent this to Admin, and hopefully this will be added to the FOD records
