Thank you for your reply,I have goggled map the workhouse, isn't strange being part of a school.

It would appear that Clifford's Court is land owned by the council, who's intention is build some sort of housing on it.[ well according to a set of minutes on the web]

Clifford's Court still exists but not as it was, if I remember rightly it's off Monnow Street, the main street in Monmouth. You can see the workhouse on-line as it's now part of Monmouth Girls School on the Hereford road, and I believe it remained a workhouse until 1948, no old folks homes in those days other than a few Almshouses.

I have all that data but the 1881 census info is for one person and the rest is for the Kate born in Monmouth Workhouse in 1886.

To me all the entries seem to be related to Kate Sophia born 1879

Kate 1886 is Kate Sophia's niece, her sister Ellen's daughter, who later appears as Kate DAVIES following Ellen's marriage..

had a change of mind about their daughter's names; changing it from Mary Ann J to Kate Sophia.

or perhaps the mothers name was entered in as the childs name by mistake ?

The only thing I can think happened is between the GRO registration and the baptism is William and Mary Ann Cater had a change of mind about their daughter's names; changing it from Mary Ann J to Kate Sophia.

Can anyone help me unravel the mystery of the Kate Caters of Monmouth.

FOD has a baptism transcription for a Kate Sophia Cater on 27 August 1879 allegedly born to William and Mary Ann Cater of Cliffords Court
but I can find no other record of her birth, death.

Does anybody know what happen to her?

I then have a Kate Cater born 9th June 1886 to Miss Ellen Cater in Monmouth Union Workhouse, who I believe marries a relation of mine Albert Whitburn or does she or was it the one above?
