Too many Charles Gwilliam's (reply)

I know this an old thread, but it was interesting to see.
We have the inscription from the headstone of Charles Gwilliam D. 16 Dec
1826 & his wife Bridget died Jan 1827 as the heading on our family tree drawing.

"Here lyeth the body of a free and honest Nailer,
Who was for many years a Forest Gailer,
But now is gone and left it all behind,
In hope of some honest work to find."

I like the word "honest" nailer, as it ties in as a nice comment to other threads on here about the hard times nailers faced and the criminal records. Looks like the family of Charles wanted to show he hadn't commited any crimes?

Charles is not a relative definitely linked to my family tree, but my Grandpa was obviously very taken with the wording.

Too many Charles Gwilliam's (reply)

You are on the right track!
Timothy b1811 married Eliza GWILLIAM daughter of James and Elizabeth GWILLIAM in 1840. Here is entry from BMD Index:
Marriages Mar 1840
GUILLIAM Eliza Monmouth 26 75
GUILLIAM Timothy Monmouth 26 75

I regret to say I do not have any more detail. This marriage is not listed in the Parish Records and is most likely to have taken place at a Register Office.

I was not aware that Timothy left these shores but explains the lack of information for him in my database.

Too many Charles Gwilliam's (reply)

I was reviewing messages on this site when I came across the name Charles Gwilliam married to Elizabeth Dotheridge. I have this Charles Gwilliam in my family tree as the father of John Gwilliam(b.1737) who was married to a Sarah Bennett. I also have Charles Gwilliam's parents listed as Charles Gwilliam and Mary Dalaway. I hope I have this correct. My mother was a Gwilliam, born in the USA as was her father James. Timothy Gwilliam (1843 in Berry Hill, West Dean) was his father. Timothy left for the USA around 1870. His parents, I believe were Timothy (b. 1811 or 1813 in West Dean) and Eliza [surname unknown]. I would like to know if I am on the right track and how I can find out the surname of Eliza Gwilliam.

I would greatly appreciate any help you can give me.
Thanks,
Emily

Too many Charles Gwilliam's (reply)

It is some years since I carried out my research i.e. in the days when we visited the Record Office and consulted Parish Registers! This is what I have:
Charles Gwilliam born c 1748 married Bridget WOOD 17 April 1770 at Littledean.
He was buried 21 December 1878 and death date from Headstone is 16 December 1826
Bridget died 20 January 1827 and buried 22 January 1827.
I have this Charles as son of William and Charity and his baptism date is 7 August 1748 at Littledean.

Charles born 1793 and son of Charles and Elizabeth nee Dotheridge does not appear to have married. He did not leave a Will and Letters of Administration were granted to his brother John on 12 Feb 1794.

Hope this is of help.

Too many Charles Gwilliam's

After visiting Littledean's St Ethlberts church I have discovered an error in my tree. The information I had was that Charles Gwilliam, dob Jan 1743, some of Charles and Elizabeth Dotheridge died in 1793 (records at-first glance-could confirm this). However I am now under the belief that he married Bridget Wood in 1770, had 2 children and died in 1826. That leaves me with where did the Charles Gwilliam who died 1793 appear from and where he fits into the larger picture. Can anyone offer any help.

Many thanks
John Gwilliam
