Charles Henry MANNS Kempley (reply)

1856 Sarah Ann Manns (daughter of William Manns and Ellen Jenkins) had an illegitimate son Called Charles Henry Manns - born in 1878, 2 years before she married 1846 William HOdges.

By 1891 Census Charles Henry surname had changed to Hodges. This was quite common when the mother married. Dont know if it was ever done officially! However, by the time he married in 1899 to Ellen Mary Lane, he had reverted back to the surname Manns! and all his children have kept the surname as well

As a side note; I did this research many years ago and i have a note written on my file to say that his father was Charles Baker. Interestingly his mother Sarah Ann had a sister who married a George Baker. Could be a connection to Charles Baker there? Perhpas Charles and George were Brothers?

Thanks Jeff for your information on Charles Manns. He was my great grandfather we had his marriage certificate and death details but no birth certificate only date of birth. Your information came to the same conclusion as us that his father left the area . We have since purchased birth certificate but no more details found . Can I ask if you have any family connections or just a contributor? Thanks

Charles Henry (Baker) Manns/HODGES (reply)

Hi Paul & Jeb,
in the unlikely event you missed my "offering" re Charles, please see my post on the John & Phoebe Hodges thread. It certainly looks to me that Charles Hodges & Carles Manns are one and the same. I was annoyed I couldn't find any definite PRs for the subsequent life of his probable father Charles Baker; perhaps this just proves he's left the area ? All very interesting.

Charles Henry Manns/HODGES (reply)

Hi Jeb,

It does seem that Charles Hodges may have used the manns surname after the 1891 census, if this is same Charles his parents were William(step father)and Sarah(nee Manns) half brothers were Albert(my great grandfather)he was born in Dymock in 1893 married Alice May in 1911 Newent, he Joined the Herefordshire regiment in ww1. John Born 1881 married Phoebe Farmer 1901 Dymock, they had a large family 12 children, sisters Ellen born 1883, married Albert Hoskins in 1899. Lily Marie born 1887 she had a son William J Hodges born 1909 no fathers name given, she later married Thomas Morris in 1914, Agnes born 1890, married William Manns in 1911 so another connection with the Manns/Hodges Family, they had two children Joyce born in 1916, William had joined the Herefordshire regt ww1 at the time Joyce's birth, their son Charles was born 1919, hope this is helpful Jeb, Paul.

Your information on Charles Manns (Hodges) seems to tie up the same as the information I have and therefore it looks like our families are connected. I would be interested in knowing about the rest of his family if you have any information.

Charles Henry Manns/HODGES (reply)

Hi Jeb, thanks for your message, got about the same info on Charles Hodges as you have born about 1878 Kempley, living with William & Sarah in the 1881 and 1891 cenus and no records of him after that, Your great grandfather Charles Henry Manns born 1878 Kempley and mother Sarah could be the same person, in one of the records i found Charles Hodges was step son to William Hodges head of the household, which would make him Sarah's son (nee Manns) from a previous relationship, Willaim and Sarah married in 1880 and Charles was born in 1878, so if this is correct Charles then used the Manns surname after 1891, not 100% sure though, hope this helps and thanks again for your message.

Paul
On reading your posting on the forum it is likely that your Great Grandfather is the half brother of my great grandfather Charles Manns (Hodges) if my research into Charles Manns is correct. I would be interested to know if you have any information which would confirm that my great grandfather was indeed the son of Sarah Hodges nee Manns.

Charles Henry MANNS Kempley

I am looking for information on Charles Henry Manns who was born on 1st June 1878 in Kempley his mother was Sarah but his father is not given on his baptism or on birth certificate.

I have found a Sarah Ann Manns born 1857 (father William and Mother Ellen)who is the correct age to have had a child in 1878.

She married William Hodges in 1880 and according to the 1881 census she had a son called Charles Hodges but there is no record of his birth.

Could this Charles actually be Charles Manns and is there any way of proving it ?
