Hi Dan & Keith,

This made me laugh! Only started looking into my Bailey ancestors (William Bailey 1676 & Elizabeth Daw) a couple of days ago and was amazed to find so much info readily available so have been immersed in it all - my husband is threatening to ban me from the laptop because I'm so absorbed!!

One question, given the available records, etc, do you think that it will ever be possible to resolve the issue over who was the parent of Anselm (d 1689) - John or Anselm?

Many thanks for sharing your info on here and happy hunting!!

Baileys of Wheatenhurst (reply)

Dan

My interpretation of the data is as follows:-

The earliest known record of a Bayly in this locality is John Bayly, a tenant farmer at Wheatenhurst, in 1479.

The Muster Roll of 1522 records for the parish of Wheatenhurst one Thomas Baylly plus another Thomas Bailly (presumed son of Thomas) and a Richard Bayly (presumed a brother to either Thomas senior or Thomas junior).

In the parish register of Wheatenhurst various births are recorded as follows: Richard, Elizabeth and Alice between 1540 and 1543, William in 1544, Henry and Elizabeth in 1547, and Giles(AEgidy) in 1548, parents unknown. Also, several burials which may have been children, adults, or wives, as follows: Henry 1544, Edward 1545, Alice 1545, Margaret 1546, Johan 1546.

One William Baily is recorded in the Muster Roll 1522 in the neighbouring parish of Longney and may have been the husband of one Margaret BAYLY residing at Longney who died circa 1547(her Will 1544) proved 1547, buried 3 March 1547 at Wheatenhurst.

Margaret Bayly, widow, in her WILL made 1544, names her sons as follows:- Wyllm the heldest, Jhon the elder, Richard, Thomas, Robart, Jhon the younger, William the younger.

First Generation being the descendants of Margaret Baylye of Longney (buried 3 March 1547 Wheatenhurst). The Chidren of Margaret Baylye:-
1. Wyllm the held(est) b.1511, bur 1557 (Will 1547) proved 1557/8 mar. Elizabeth Batt (Will 1578) [see the descendants of William Baylye of Wheatenhurst in the Visitation 1682-84 and supplemental records]
2. Jhon the helder [see John 6.] either d.1563 Eastington mar to Agnes
3. Richard d.1588 Wheatenhurst (Will 1588) mar 4 February 1568 North Nibley to Agnes Wilkins
4. Thomas d. 1557 Quedgeley (Will 1557) mar to Alyss d.1580 Wheatenhurst (Will 1580)
5. Robart – birth not known
6. Jhon the younger [see John 2.] d.1575 married to Jone

Baileys of Wheatenhurst (reply)

Hi Dan
I have been researching the Bailey family at Wheatenhurst for some years. My family are descended from William Bailey of Elmore who died 1579.

There is some excellent research available. On line (www.whaite.com) is Joy Whaite's family history "From Little Dean to Enoggera" which encompasses Robin Roberts family history of 16th / 17th century family research. Chapter 2 provides a considerable amount of data on the Baileys of Wheatenhurst.

There is a book called "The Family Saga" published by Marie Lawry which traces her branch of the same family in the 18th/19th century that emigrated to New Zealand.
Most of the above research was conducted in the 1990's. Since then there has been more information available which enhances the above above.

The Heralds Visitation of Gloucester 1682 - 1684 (available on Google Books) provides information on another branch of the family in Wheatenhurst who became lords of the manor of Wheatenhurst, and later Fretherne.Again, they were clothiers. Reference to this branch of the family (John, William and Anselm) is recorded in the British History, an on line volume covering Gloucestershire, in the chapter for Wheatenhurst.

Also, Ancestry.co.uk has recently publish Wills & Probate records for Gloucestershire on line which provides Wills of several Baileys (i.e. Bayly, Bailey, Bayley, Baylye, Baley) which are connected to your branch of the family tree.

I also have a digitised copy of the Wheatenhurst Parish Register (or what’s left of it), covering 1538 to 1660, which I have transcribed. Plus copies of several Wills, most of which were provided by Gloucestershire Archives. Happy to provide details.

Regards

Baileys of Wheatenhurst (reply)

Many thanks for your help. I have found that a lot of the baileys were clothiers. They are well documented however they seem to differ slightly. If i am correct, I have traced back to William bailey 1579. This has definitely been an easier branch of my tree to complete. Many thanks for your help

Baileys of Wheatenhurst

Hello I am wondering if anyone could help, or even researching in the same area.

I have traced my wife's family back to Anselm Bailey b. 1673 in Wheatenhurst. I have also found other Anselm Baileys of an earlier period also from Wheatenhurst and would like to be able to link them. I have Anselm being married to an Elizabeth Boon but am not sure how reliable this is.

Any help would be much appreciated

Many thanks

Dan
