Percy Henry Prosser b 1884 Ross on Wye. (reply)

Thanks Mike.
Yes the "Ross" death record that I thought I'd already posted does seem likely, but how odd (or maybe not in this hobby, haha), that you find an equally good fit in Birmingham too of all places. Given it seems his wife Edith was buried in Mitcheldean, it seems likely that Percy's there too, but ???.

Hopefully I'll soon get some feedback from one of his ancestors wrt the accuracy of these findings.

Thanks again sir.

PS I really am going to have to subscribe again to the 1939 Register - I spent ages on the weekend using the Ancestry free access, mostly looking for just a few of my wive's ancestors, her London east end folk were very "elusive" indeed ahem, beginning to think they were gangsters not dockers haha - hence when this enquiry came along I'd run out of time on Ancestry. Think I'm due an early birthday gift.

Percy Henry Prosser b 1884 Ross on Wye. (reply)

I imagine this is the favourite for Percy’s death. There seems to be no image available of any PR and I guess he was buried closer to where he originated.

GR England & Wales deaths 1837-2007
First Name Percy H
Last Name Prosser
Gender Male
Birth Year 1885
Birth Month
Birth Day
District Ross
Country England
Line Number 44

As far as I can see the only other candidate is this,

GR England & Wales deaths 1837-2007
First Name Percy H
Last Name Prosser
Gender Male
Year 1950

However, there is an Ancestry National Probate Calendar entry which indicates that this was a Percy Herman PROSSER who died 19 October 1950 so unlikely to be relevant despite one of the children probably settling in Birmingham.

East and Prosser Families of Ross. (reply)

Hi,
Apparently the name "Gwladys" is of ancient Welsh origin, originally "Gwladus".

It's uncertain as to it's exact original meaning, it may derive either from the Latin name Claudius, (hence the name Claudia) or from the Welsh word "gwlad," meaning "countryside" which seems more probable to me. "Gladys" is the later English derivative.

As these links show the name's associated with ancient Welsh royalty/nobility.

http://www.breconbeacons.org/visit-us/about-the-brecon-beacons/legend-of-gwladys-and-ei...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gwladus_Ddu

I suspect in this instance the name was intended as "Gwladys" but has perhaps been understandably mispelt by Census recorders/transcribers.
It's interesting to see the above Brecon Beacons hyperlink even mis-spells it as it points to the story of "Gwladus" !

Hope this helps.

with respect to the Census details. The spelling of Gwaladys is it correct or should
it be Gladys.

Best start Thomas Picton search with IGI sheets for Poyston, Pembrokeshire 1758. Being gentry, entries may be more complete than some. Most public libraries have IGI.

Just looked up the IGI on www.familysearch.org. Can't be sure but this looks hopeful. Thomas Picton, bapt. Rudbaxton, Pembrokeshire, 15Aug1758. Father John, mother Cecil(sic) Powell. Died 1815. Lt. General Sir Thomas Picton was killed 18th June 1815 at Battle of Waterloo.

Thanks for your reply.I have Leonard and Gladys in my tree but only have 3 of their children up to 1901.I didn't know about Arthur Leonard.I wonder if your son in law knows of other children. The free BMD has about 10 entries Pontypool reg between 1901 and 1910.Leonard's children would be 1st cousins of my grandfather.Have you come across the army service record for their eldest son Albert Sidney on ancestry?

My son in law is the Grandson of Arthur Leonard EAST (the son of Leonard
and Gladys) and his wife Ada nee PROSSER.I understand from my son in law that the
PICTON connection may go back to Sir Thomas PICTON the famous army general. Thanks again for your help and I will hopefully reply with more information for you.
