Polio epidemic in Lydney 1930s - Mundays Family (reply)

Hi Olwyn,Many thanks for your interest, its good to know someone is listening,Yes I do know his name,it was George C.A.Munday,born 1928,in Lydney,Glos.I have found his birth at last only this week,As I had put in my original message,I always thought he had died as a child, from terms used by my mum, Then his brother now 77,Said he thought he had died when he himself was aged 21,well he was 2 years younger than George,so I have searched around that time, yet again,in case, searching the 40s and 50s,even checking,a different spelling,'Mundy',and making sure there were no late entries at the foot of the page, but no,nothing as yet, His brother who I have already mentioned did say that he knew George was brought back to Lydney, after he died, for burial,so I really dont know, but thanks again for your interest, Regards Carol.

Polio epidemic in Lydney 1930s - Mundays Family (reply)

Hi
Are you certain that the person you are looking for actually did die as a young man? Or could he have lived much longer than you imagine, surviving the Iron Lung?
Do you have any idea at all about his first name?
I do know of someone who could possibly have fitted your description.

Hector MUNDY 1930 Cinderford (reply)

He's not the Hector buried in Cinderford aged 9 in 1930 by any chance ??

There was a Polio peak in 1937/38 and then again in 1947/48 the later due to servicemen returning from afar... ( and 1938 was the year Lord Nuffield donated "iron lungs" to hospitals - I think the comparison was they cost approx. the same as a typical house)

I have a feeling Polio was an isolation case so - Over Hospital Gloucester, or Ham Green Bristol would be where I might expect to find him being treated.

Ther was a TB clinic run out of Cinderford and the small isolation unit at Green Bottom, but I think smallpox was its focus.

I've found a Clifford who is registered in Bristol Q4 1936 age 0, looks like born Q1 Bristol ? - do you know the christian name ?

Polio epidemic in Lydney 1930s - Mundays Family (reply)

This Surname rang a bell with me, there was a family who owned a sweetshop/Tobbacconists in Coleford during 1950s/60s and 70,s, they had a son called David. i am not sure how the surname is spelt as it can be spelt Mundy as well, but if you go into BT directory there are Munday's still living in the area.
Regards
