Diana MORGAN, Bream/Newland, 1792 - 1862 (reply)

Dorothy, I've been trying to respond to your e-mail, but am afraid I'm not terribly computer competent. I am a g+granddaughter of Carmalla Morgan, niece of William Morgan. Mary and her mother Diana are also, of course, in my direct line.

I had found a marriage of a Diana Grange and William Morgan, but unable to prove that is a marriage of the correct people we are considering. Slowhands had mentioned that there is a William, collier, listed in one of the records, then crosed out. Was told at a seminar that often the minister would 'update' records using this method if the person named in the record had passed away prior to the baptism, etc. of the child. I guess we could consider that as well.

Mary died in 1869, Carmalla and 3 sons emmigrated to USA in 1871, husband John Fletcher (according to family stories) had been working as a surveyor in South America for 18 months prior to meeting family in USA. (my brother William has his surveying instruments).

The Sarah White and 2 daughters listed in 1871 census as boarders were actually John's sister and nieces. Carmalla & John went on to have 2 daughters and 4 more sons once they arrived here. My grandfather was the youngest son in 1871 census, Ernest. I had long suspected Carmalla was illegitimate; caused a huge family scandle here in a more puritanical time.

You mentioned William had a daughter Carmalla, I had several cousins here also named Carmalla. William is a recurring name in our family as well over the generations.

Please be in touch. Kathy Fletcher

Hello - I'm wondering if I would qualify for membership in your society. My great grandmother was Carmalla Morgan of Bream's. She was born in Bream's in 1844, sailed for the United States in August 1871.

By that time she had married my great-grandfather, John Fletcher of Woolaston, and was the mother of 3 sons, one of which was my grand father, Ernest Fletcher. I would be very interested in information on your society and would also be interested in hearing from someone from your area who would be interested in correspondence.

Good luck with your annual meeting, wish I could be there.

Diana MORGAN, Bream/Newland, 1792 - 1862 (reply)

Thanks Slowhands,
I was so hoping I wouldn't get something like this, as it's so difficult to go back any further.
Looking at the info you have provided, it seems daughter was following, mum's footsteps thro 3 generations having babes out of wedlock.
The more I look at it, the more likely it is the right family. I'm particularly focusing on Carmala, as my William had a daughter Carmela, and as it's an unusual name, it's more probable to be his family than not. I was so hoping it was the family Chris gave me.....much easier to continue search. Although William went to live in Monmouthshire, in between his being there 1851 and the family moving to Somerset 1861, he and his wife had a son born in Bream viz John Pritchard Morgan. The two prior to John and all other siblings after 1861 were born back in Monmouthshire as they moved back there sometime after 1861 census. I'm new to this site and have tried putting his name into the search but nothing is coming up.
Thanks very much for taking the time to reply. Its much appreciated.
Dorothy

William Morgan, Newland, circa 1827 (reply)

Many thanks Chris. Being in Glamorgan, I'm not over familiar with Forest of Dean. My husband and I went on one of our 'Discovery' days out last year and visited Newland and Bream so I know they are not far from one another. Is Little Dean also close to these?
