Edward Percy PHILLIPS 1895-1942 UPDATE (reply)

Hi
I had a phone call this morning from one of Edwards sons, and Edward is buried in St Peters churchyard in Newnham, and his wifes (Lena) ashes were scattered there too. I have the phone number of the vicar there, I got it when we visited the graveyard 2 weeks ago, so I will give her a ring. And yes I must have been quite close to him, I do hope I didn't walk over him as it's an unmarked grave.
I had a lovely chat and found out a bit more about Edward and the family and we exchanged stories, and have also got several e-mail addresses for other members of the family, including Edward's other son who lives in Brazil.
After months of looking I feel as though I've won the lottery!! This has all been made possible because of this wonderful site.

Thank you all so much.

Edward Percy PHILLIPS 1895-1942 UPDATE (reply)

Hi Judy, wow thats excellent news, welldone Slowhands!, many thanks Judy for updating us. I appreciate the desire was for an unmarked grave and that it's your family and NOT mine, but if you feel able to share the approximate location of the grave (eg Glos, Berks, etc) then I for one would be very interested to know.
However if not thats completely fine too of course, I'm just so very pleased you've found Percy at last !
Thanks again for posting, best wishes to you and yours, Jeff

I'm pleased to tell you that thanks to Slowhands I am now in touch with a member of the Phillips family - my half cousin. He understands that Edward was buried in an unmarked grave (his wishes) and he is going to get in touch with his father (Timothy) to find out the details, as well as send me some photographs of Edward. I am so grateful for the help I have received from Slowhands, Jeff and m p griffiths in my search. Keep up the good work. Judy

Charles Gordon PHILLIPS 1908 - 1991 Eton (reply)

Hi

Thank you for that, he seemed to be a very talented musician and composer. It's a pity Dad didn't know him when he was alive, he must have been a very interesting person. He and his wife Brenda Cooper never had children, hence the letter Dad received from the Solicitor tracing living relations.

Jeff,

Yes it would be interesting to know how the name Beryl came about, maybe bad handwriting. I know some of the writing on census's is hard to make out.

It could be that Lena had family in London, and also as we think now that she originated in Bath, living in Berkshire she would be on the same railway line to go either way.
This information gives me more to get my teeth into! It would be nice to find out if I have family out there somewhere.

I remember the film Genevieve, I will have a look at the website, it'll give me a break from the family tree.

Thanks for that Slowhands,
so it seems probable that Lena passed her later years in the same Berkshire area as at least one of her sons, there may even be some living relatives still there for Judy to consider searching.
Re the quoted records, is it just me that gets annoyed that Ancestry still seem to think Westbury On Severn, as per your quoted Marriage record, is "in Shropshire" where I accept another "Westbury" but not "Westbury S" also is ??

------------------------

Judy,
thanks so much for adding to the thread re Lena, especially wrt the Burgh name, sorry for my asking so many questions it's not just down to my noseyness honest !. Last night I started searching FreeBMD on the assumption that Burgh was perhaps a surname she'd "gained" from a previous marriage, but my searches were without much success. I knew it was a surname as near us in West Drayton Middlesex is the De Burgh Arms pub immediately next to the old GWR mainline station, apparently it was an important family name locally. #

HOWEVER as per my earlier post the GlosBMD site have her name at marriage as "Beryl" !?; I therefore concluded that "Burgh" was a redherring due to an Ancestry transcription error, apologies for my mistake.
It would perhaps be good to know where GlosBMD got "Beryl" from.

During my searches of FreeBMD I found many mentions of the Newman name in the London area, which is along the GWR railway route from the Forest thro' Berkshire, which nowadays is commuter country down the socalled Thames Valley Corridor from London.
Perhaps this London "link" maybe why Lena lived in Berkshire ? Maybe she had links with Eton School, just across the Thames from Windsor. All speculation of course, altho this seems more likely than Stroud, perhaps.

Am I right in recalling the Ancestry searchpages suggested that Edward has military links ?, if so were these in Berkshire ??

# Re the De Burgh Arms pub, if like me you have a love of British comedy films not to mention all things 1950s then you may know the film "Genevieve" about the London - Brighton veteran car run. This website gives an interesting background to the making of the film, virtually all done not far from here ie Pinewood Studios. If you track down this site it shows photos of the pub as featured in the film.

Edward Percy PHILLIPS - Mercury Archives (reply)

Hi Judy,
yes the DF Guardian was the main Forest paper every Thursday from the 1870s until becoming the Lydney Observer & the DF Mercury in the 1920s and then The Forester in 1990. Until around 12 years ago The Forester was printed on the same beautiful old press at the same premises in Cinderford just a few yards down from the Library premises. (As a mechanical engineer I was delighted to see the old press working while still at the old office, nowadays of course its all done far more efficiently using that noofangled electrickery).
www.theforester.co.uk

The other local newspaper over much the same timescale is the daily Citizen based in Gloster, it is archived in the aforementioned BNA website.
http://www.thisisgloucestershire.co.uk/contact.html

I'm confident a search of the Mercury archive at Cinderford Library will be productive for you, especially as you have a good idea of the issue dates you're after. I suggest you try and visit the Library during a weekday if possible, it's so much busier on a Saturday morning, especially if you want to browse their good selection of local history books(see their website catalogue). I think the Library prefer advance booking to use the microfiche readers, especially Saturdays. If you prefer to see the original newspapers themselves, the Forester office do accept visitors (early in the week, please) but note the papers are large broadsheets bound in heavy leather covers, so handling and especially photocopying is awkward and space is limited. Please contact them in advance first via this email which goes to my sister Sally Coleman or her colleague, adverts AT theforester.co.uk

Wishing you all the best with your search, please revisit the thread to update us if you can, thanks.
Jeff.

Edward Percy PHILLIPS 1896-1942 (reply)

Hi Jeff

I have the 1911 census that states a Marjorie Adalina Newman in Bath, Somerset, I'm not sure whether it is her but I also have this birth record, so maybe it is.

Name: Marjorie Adelin? B Newman
Date of Registration: Jul-Aug-Sep 1909
Registration district: Bath
Inferred County: Somerset
Volume: 5c
Page: 458

I couldn't remember where I got the name BURGH from (Adalena Marjorie BURGH Newman) so I checked my records and found a letter that my father received in 1995 from a Solicitor who was tracing living relatives of Prof Charles Gordon PHILLIPS who died in 1991, in the letter it shows 4 generations of the PHLLIPS family (which was a good start for me)and states "Edward Percy PHILLIPS who was born 14th September 1895, who married firstly Florence Alice May ROBINS in 1914, secondly Adalena Marjorie Burgh NEWMAN in 1930 and who died in 1942". Until then Dad had no knowledge of his cousin. So that's where the Burgh comes in.

I know that one of Percy and Lena's sons who visited Dad years ago lived in Wales at the time. Now you know as much as I do about Lena, not a lot I know.

This is the Death Record for Lena:

Name: Marjorie Adelena B Phillips
Birth Date: 15 Aug 1909
Date of Registration: Jun 1984
Age at Death: 74
Registration district: Reading and Wokingham
Inferred County: Berkshire
Volume: 19

If it is her I don't know why she ended up in Berkshire. Unless she remarried but then her Surname would be different.

As for Stroud, I just don't know.

I will start on newspaper archives tomorrow and start with Cinderford Library.

It seems that Edward "Percy" is as elusive in death as he was in life.

Edward Percy PHILLIPS - Newspapers (reply)

Hi

Thanks for that, I have touched briefly into old newspapers, but having looked at the website that you recommended it looks like the best bet is contacting Cinderford Library as it mentioned several local papers. I can remember Dad speaking about the Mercury years ago so maybe start there. I will make start with the library tomorrow.
Thanks once again.

Edward Percy PHILLIPS - Obituaries in Newspapers (reply)

Hi MPG, thanks for your great suggestion, I'm ashamed I didn't think of that !
THANKS especially for the link to the Glos Archives Document, VERY usefull especially wrt the "DF Mercury" now "Forester" Archives held by Cinderford Library which would have covered Newnham. Only a few weeks ago I was quizzing The Forester staff(my sister) on this very subject and had decided to ask the Library for precise clarification, thanks for saving me wasting their valuable time.
Current contact details for Cinderford Library are in link below. My recent experiences show they are still bedevilled by technical problems wrt the Council website contact pages and direct emails, but the excellent staff at Cinderford are great once they receive a phonecall, letter or a personal visit of course, ably led by Lisa Robinson.
http://www.forum.forest-of-dean.net/index.php?id=34751

Another possible course would be the British Newspaper Archive site, see this thread, altho this Burial may be too recent to be covered by their archives.

Edward Percy PHILLIPS - Newspapers (reply)

Another option is going through the local Newspaper Archives for his Obituary - as if there is one, this should state where the Funeral Service took place + interment information/and afterwards may be the report of the funeral , who attended and floral tributes.

I have both of these i.e. Death Announcement/and after the funeral took place of my Grannie who died in 1949 in Swindon, Wiltshire which lists Mourners (some from Blakeney), which has been very useful for family grouping.

Back numbers of Newspapers are sometimes held in the local Reference Library/Record Offices etc.
