FELTONS in South Africa ? (reply)

Some time ago I found out about a South African website called Ancestry 24. I had been looking for a relative in South Africa for some time and had not been able to find him. However, after trying on Ancestry 24 over a long period, his name suddenly appeared under deceased estates and I have been able to get in touch with his children.

I have had a quick look on it but cannot find any reference to Thomas Felton. However, it is worth checking it out from time to time as new information is added regularly. As with most sites, you can look things up but to get the full information you have to make a subscription. Hope this might be helpful.

FELTONS in South Africa ? (reply)

Slowhands, I know you are a man of few words, fair enough, but I'm really not sure what your point is ?
Apologies if I've not made myself clear.
I don't recall saying or even suggesting I was looking for direct descendants of Thomas William b1852.
Are we saying all of Heather's ancestors are descended from this Thomas, surely not ?
Furthermore Heather says Thomas "disappears in 1900"... I took this as an observation based on the Records so far seen by Heather, who infers she hasn't looked at SA ?. As you know people don't just "disappear" off the planet, although they do perhaps go "off the radar" as t'were.

I was just trying to encourage Heather that she might enjoy looking into possible links with South Africa and her Felton ancestors, as per her family's own rumours, not mine.

Furthermore Heather says Thomas "disappears in 1900"... I took this as an observation based on the Records so far seen by Heather, who infers she hasn't looked at SA ?. As you know people don't just "disappear" off the planet, although they do perhaps go "under the radar" as t'were.

The fact is my quick look into the LDS "Africa" records gave some Felton hits in SA, apparently English men, by far the major hit was for the John William Felton I refer. This was coincidence (perhaps) - I was NOT searching for a William forename which as you know is not a rare one..

This was my first ever look into Africa records, it won't be the first although they are probably beyond the scope of this forum. So I was looking partly for personal reasons but mainly hoping to show Heather that she might enjoy looking into possible links with South Africa and her Felton ancestors, as per her family's own rumours.

??

NB: Kaapstaad is Afrikaans for Cape Town.
It was from the late 1860s onwards when diamonds then gold were discovered in the Transvaal(Afrikaans/Dutch) region of South Africa, inland from Cape Town. This caused huge expansion of the city & population.

John & Julia have the following children:

from the basenote we are given
She married Thomas William Felton, from Stourbridge, Staffordshire, in 1879 in Christchurch, New Zealand and in a later note
Thomas, the father, disappears after 1900
which rather rules out this chap /family in SA from 1874

--------------------------------------------

Searching for John William Felton born abt 1855, LDS suggests a few including my favourite:
name: John William Felton
gender: Male
baptism/christening date: 08 May 1853
baptism/christening place: Christ Church, Tynemouth, Northumberland, England
birth date: 14 Apr 1853
father's name: Matthew Felton
mother's name: Isabella

In the 1861 Census they're in Seaton Delaval, nr Blyth Northumberland. Until I started researching my brother-in-law's family 2 weeks ago I'd never heard of it, now I know it was a major coal mining area AND near the seaport of Newcastle On Tyne. I cannot find him in the UK after 1871 where he is still single at home ??.

Another possible:
John William Felton, baptised 10 Sep 1854, Solihull Warwickshire, parents John & Mary Anne. HOWEVER he is still in Solihull in 1891 Census.

Also of interest may be the sole African birth offered, and at Cape Town too !.
Perhaps a brother of the aforementioned John; if so it looks unlikely this John is one of yours given his Salisbury parents ??

Of course this is NO evidence at all that your family did extend to the Cape, or that John William for example was an engineer/miner, but hopefully it helps you in your search which should be an interesting one.

Thomas William FELTON 1852 Stourbridge WOR (reply)

Thank you so much for your help tracing the Mobberley/Felton families. When in New Zealand Thomas Felton became an engineer and Maud owned one of the first cars in Christchurch. Maud spelt her name Maberley, and this name has been handed down two more generations as a christian name. My grandmother-in-law was Averil Maberley Southen, granddaughter of Thomas and Maud. Thomas, the father, disappears after 1900; I cannot find any record in New Zealand so I will look in England again, but family rumour has an unnamed Felton in South Africa's diamond mines.. engineers would be in demand there too.
Thanks again,
