Hi Im Audrey.. and yes i do believe the came could have had many changes, it is said that the name was Doul/ Doole but I have no proof of this.

Hi I'm Audrey and the answer to your question is yes, they were from Monmouth and Newland in the 1700!s also West Dean THeophulis and his wife Emma Ivy Howell came to N.Z. in 1862 and a year later his brother Samuel came.Two children came with Samuel and his wife Fanny. Theo and Emma had their son on board the ship ( Egmont) so he was named Rueben Egmont. Both families settled in Christchurch and were said to be stone masons or labourers.

This may not be of much help to you but I thought you might like to consider this: I have an ancestor called Dowell (1545) that name has changed over the centuries to Doole. Perhaps you have already made this connection but if not it may help you to widen your search.
