I contacted the FOD site originally to see if I could find out if the Thomas Stephens, seaman born 1831 Mitcheldean was in any way related to my grandfather (maybe an uncle or such) I didn't think that he was his father.
I obtained the info re seaman Thomas Stephens on the Find My Past site, and noticed the Mitcheldean connection. I am guessing that you are on the Ancestry site- what is your connection to the Stephens family? I would love to know.

Where you looking for a Thomas STEPHENS occupation Seaman - from the marriage certificate of Nelly Amelia ALLDRIDGE (age 28 and a Spinster) to Thomas STEPHENS (age 42, and a Widower) in 1902 - and assumed his father, was Thomas STEPHENS a (Seaman deceased) and not (Sawyer deceased) as stated on Thomas/Nelly's marriage certificate as per copy of this marriage on Public Members Tree. Or, do you have a copy of his previous marriage(s) which states different occupation of his father?

This marriage certificate is also on Ancestry

There are many Public Members Trees on Ancestry + many photographs - and the marriage certificate of Thomas STEPHENS in 1902 - in which he states, his father Thomas STEPHENS (deceased) was a Sawyer.

I have been in touch with my Cousin and she has the same information as you have re Thomas and Lavinia Stephens and also John Charles Stephens who she thinks may have died aged about 2. However she has been unable to find out anything further about either Thomas or Lavinia and wonders if one or both of them died. If Thomas died, then he could not have been our grandfather, as our grandmother married a Thomas Stephens in 1902. What we do know is that our grandfather was a coachbuilder who could have worked for a railway company and apart from that it is a dead end. Any further information you have would be most welcome. Given the Micheldean Thomas is living in Bradford area in 1881
This looks like him in 1891 with a wife transcribed as Sarah not Lavinia but
possible to understand how that was recorded.

I wonder if he is Thomas HERBERT or Thomas STEPHENS by birth ?

? As Thomas STEPHENS c1857 is your Grandfather - did he marry ??? and what are the names of his child/ren (i.e. your Father's or Mother's name, ? where were they born and what year(s) - so we can work forward + backwards from there….. You have to go back, a step at a time.
