At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.

" Official notice has come to hand of the death at
the front of Pte. Bertie Tom Beard, son of Mr. and Mrs.
Tom Beard of Victoria Street Cinderford. He had previously
worked as a soldier, but when he enlisted on May 3rd 1916
he was engaged by his father as a haulier. He was attached
to the Royal Fusiliers. First engaged in France, he was
afterwards transferred to the Italian front, but later
returned to France where on September 29th , he paid the
great sacrifice. The notice stated that he was killed
in action or died from wounds. Another notice received
on the previous day, stated that he was reported missing.
He was 31, and was especially well known in the district
as a compassionable young man, and very actively interested
in the manly sports of cricket, football etc. His death
will be much regretted and much kind sympathy will be
given to his parents and other friends . "
