John Portrey was born after 1693, so may not have been old enough to be in any position by 1715

As for the rest, the more I learn, the less I know!

I was searching for Portreys in Ystradgynlais and I've got people I have no idea who they are. I ASSUME it's a collateral line, and as succession to the manor and estate is not the same as to a dukedom (heirs male, entail) it went to the simple route, the female heir of the last male, rather than to male collateral branches.

Searching both Gloucestershire Archives and the National Archives

Under the heading:

Saint Briavels is listed as a subsidiary of Lydney but there is a huge gap from the 1680s to 1804

but for some reason I cannot locate Saint Briavels. You cannot search by parish as such, only by diocese, and I've tried Gloucester, Salisbury, Hereford and Llandaff but Saint Briavels doesn't seem to be there

For John Portrey it has two entries, which it has not merged into the same person
- 1732 Vicar at Cadoxton-Juxta-Neath With Crynant And Aberpergwm, appointed in June (Johannes)
- 1739 Rector at Ystradgynlais, institution October (John)

Without being able to find Saint Briavels in the database, I can't see if some bastardised format of his name is mentioned there

The writing in the Register seems to have changed in 1724 (although on the Forest of Dean records it gives the date as 1723....

Ah, thank you

Neath Antiquarian Society told me there were some records pertaining to Rev John Portrey in Wiltshire, but without being able to look at them I was not sure what sort of date they had, or why they had ended up there. He is given as Rector of Ystradgynlais 1739-1742. So him being curate for Saint Briavels before that fits into the years available.

William Gough married Catherine, John's brother, in 1717 so it could be that John essentially followed her up, rather than was already in Gloucestershire. But is definitely good to see a date for him somewhere there!

In 1725 - there is a marriage of Richard RAWLINGS & Margrettam HOPKINS 9 June and just below this is

Gul DAVIS - (who seems to be being buried and Johan PORTREY is the Curate for the marriage and burials)

Ah, I had wondered how William Gough came to meeet, and then marry, Catherine Portrey! There is also one of the Ynyscedwyn estate papers which appears to lease lands out to Richard Portrey (her brother) which had me wondering if the Portreys were already present in Gloucestershire (despite not appearing in baptismal records) because otherwise it seemed an awful long way to come up from Breconshire.

As I guess all we can say with a degree of certainty , is that it is possible.

Names have changed over the years as much due to the "who was recording" as the whim of the individual. If the family was literate then I would expect less change, whereas if the name was being recorded by a third party and simply an "X" entered in a register, then anything is possible !

In my desparate meanderings to find the ancestors of Thomas Morgan(born about 1650, died 1710 Lydney) and his wife Prudence U/K I came across the following reference. Anne Gill baptised on the 13th October 1691 Lydney(IGI, Family Search), married an U/K Pottery (GDR 1730/51). They had issue: Mary Pottery, Sarah Pottery and John Pottery all born in Lydney. According to the National Archives of Wales web-site, the daughter of Christopher Portrey, Catherine, married William Gough of Willsbury, St Briavels Gloucestershire. The Portreys were from Ystradgynlais, the connection with the FOD being the extensive tin and other mining interests there. Could the name Portrey, which in one generation changed to Pottery, in further generations have contracted to Potter?

Anne Gill was the daughter of Richard Gill and Mary Morgan (my ancestor) so, alas, I cannot count the esteemed author as an ancestor.
