James Layton 1823- born in Pauntley / Pool Hill (reply)

James Leighton is listed as buried in Cinderford

If you need to locate the grave it might be worth asking who transcribed the records to see if there are any scribbled numbers showing near his entry on the parish register.

next to both my grandparents entries in the register are the numbers B/13/22 this tells me that mine are buried in Area B row 13 and grave# 22 it wasn't originally on the transcriptions so its worth asking. You might be lucky !!

January I will be hunting for that grave

James Layton 1823- born in Pauntley / Pool Hill (reply)

Thanks for your comments Slowhands and Lesley. Thomas Layton and Sarah Starling were indeed the parents of Thomas Jnr c 1805 and James c 1809, however I don't believe that my James was his son, as I have a copy of his will, which only mentions the above two sons. Thomas Jnr would be about the right age to be his father, but the first child I have been able to identify born to him is Samuel, who was born in 1827. However, four years of marriage without a baby in those times is pretty unusual, is it not?
As for Pool Hill, Lesley, I have a copy of Eric Warde's book, which helped me identify the areas, and cottages in which the Leightons had lived over the years. Two or three weekends ago I sent my Leighton "cousin", discovered during my research, out to Pool Hill to take what photos he could, so I now have my own photos of the village.
Anyway, I'll keep tossing this mystery into the forum every few months, and maybe something will eventually turn up. In the meantime I will keep searching for that elusive baptism, if in fact he was baptised. I have checked Oxenhall and Newent on Hugh Wallis' site with no luck.
I don't suppose there is anybody out there who lives handy to Cinderford who would be prepared to search for and photograph James' grave for me? I believe he was buried from the Parish Church on 25 October 1894, and by that time was using the Leighton spelling.

James Layton 1823- born in Pauntley / Pool Hill (reply)

Sorry I can't add much to your other respondent but I was interested as I live in Pool Hill myself and have been researching a Leighton for a book on the 1st World War memorial. Leightons abounded in Pauntley, especially Pool Hill, in the 19th century! I have found, when looking at Pauntley records, that some Pool Hill children seemed to have been baptised in Oxenhall and even Newent, for some reason - Pool Hill was split between Newent and Pauntley at one time, which might account for it, but it might be worth having a look there if you can't trace him in Pauntley. Shame the houses in Pool Hill didn't tend to have names at that time or I could get you a photo!

James Layton 1823- born in Pauntley / Pool Hill

I am still trying to determine the parents of my gg grandfather James Leighton (Layton). I know his fathers name was Thomas, but which Thomas? And who was his mother? I believe he was working as a farm labourer in Ledbury under the name Leyton in the 1841 census. He then moved to Dymock and married Eliza Harris, and was listed as Lyton in 1851, and Layghton in 1861. He moved to Cinderford prior to 1871, and died there in 1894.
It is possible he may be the son of Thomas Layton and Comfort Hiam, who were married in 1823 in St Nicholas, Gloucester in 1823, and lived in Pool Hill, but I have not been able to locate his baptism. I have tried Pauntley Parish records, and most other known channels, but wondered if anyone could think of anything a bit more obscure that I may not have thought of.
