Alexander BARRETT 1896 - 1968 (reply)

I guess if you start with a copy of the death cert it should give an idea of where he was living etc.

A number of potential Williams / Barrett children are in the BMD list around 1925....

In the Pontypool area there were institutions in Griffithstown and Llanvrechva - long shot sorry - I hope the death cert gives some clues....

Williams of Pilstone farm Whitebrook (reply)

Dear May,

Thanks for getting back to me. It looks like our branches of the Williams family are more distantly related, mine seem to have been carpenters and publicans.

Slowhands has kindly done a lot of research and I have found out a great deal from this. It`s fascinating as it clarifies things a lot at last.
I feel like i am getting to know them .

Best Wishes and good luck with your research

Mabel Isabella WILLIAMS nee TAMPLIN 1890 -1945 Trelleck (reply)

Hello Slowhands,

Spot on ! This is the Mabel who was my great grand mother, going by the dates you gave me it ties in with family legend that she was 17 when she married Edwin Taylor Williams. She had been the maid for both him and his first wife.......

Yes, Alexander Barret was Mabel williams second husband and thereby hangs a sad story. Barret had been in the First World War and as an aftermath suffered from what in those days was called shell-shock. I had no idea that he and Mabel had married so early on- 1918 , this would mean that my gran would have known her stepfather Barret for longer than she knew Edwin her father, but no one ever talked about him, he just seemed to have faded away. It was not until recent years that I heard that the poor man had been sent to a mental home. I was told that he had died around 1945 the same time as Mabel ) so it is a shock to discover that it was in fact 1968. How can I find out what actually happened to him ? Did he go to a mental asylum ? If so how old was he when admitted ? Did he die in there ? He and Mabel had a daughter around 1925, so he went presumably after that ?

Best Wishes

Williams of Pilstone farm Whitebrook (reply)

Hello Lorraine,

To follow up my off-site email last weekend, I came online tonight to confirm details of the Edwin Williams in my Family Tree.

Edwin was born 1899 at Chapel Hill, son of James (b Pilstone 1859), and grandson of William Williams ( b 1831 Trellech) and who lived at Pilstone until the 1880's.

I am delighted to see that Slowhands has given you useful info on your Edwin Williams. Good luck with your research and, thank you Slowhands.

Mabel Isabella TAMPLIN 1890 Trelleck (reply)

Dear Slowhands,

Thank you for all the further info. I`ve been pouring over it and I think i`m starting to get a picture !
Looks like my great grandfather`s (Edwin Taylor Williams ) mother died giving birth to him ( aged 44 and her 9th child ), he was then handed over to Elizabeth Taylor (!!) her 48 yr old sister and her husband , William Taylor, ( publican of the Sloop or the Ship ,Llandogo ). Was it an official adoption ? Were the Taylors childless ?
I think my great grandfather maybe felt some rejection from all this, because nobody in the family knew about his mother`s death at childbirth nor that he was adopted.

I think he still stayed close to some of his family, my nan mentioned her aunts Milbro and Mary ( she and her elder sister were named after ) also her uncle Victor. The one Edwin seemed to have been closest to was his nephew Victor, the one that you revealed married Eva Hodges, whose parents ran the grocery shop in Llandogo. This Victor is listed as present on both the death certificates of Edwin and his first wife Lydia Mary. Victor williams address is given as the Rosery (?) and the Sloop Llandogo. Edwin`s first marriage was childless and it looks like his nephew victor, who was edwin`s eldest brother Albert`s son, acted as a surrogate son.
Unfortunately I never met Victor ,if he died in 1951, it was before my time. I do remember a very nice couple at the Llandogo grocery shop in the 1960s but don`t know if they were Williams or Hodges.

The addresses you gave me all make sense, the lion pub which was next to Inglewood house, llandogo. This is the house my gran was born in.The Cabin was not the one in the Narth, if I remember rightly, next to Inglewood house there was a narrow footpath that ran up the side of the garden, at the top of this was the Cabin, which Edwin or one of the Williams had built for his second wife Mabel and their ever increasing family. I think he sold Inglewood circa 1912 ( hard times ?)
I`d love to know where Edwin lived with the Taylors and when he acquired Inglewood. I`d love to see inside Inglewood, though I expect it`s much changed now.

The Mabel Isabella Tamplin you mentioned I don`t think is my great grandmother because she died in 1945 and lived in Monmouth, she was in her early 40s. Strangely I`m pretty sure that Her maiden name was Tamplin, could there have been two ?

Once again thank you so much for all this fascinating info which has enabled me to find out so much about my family.

Best Wishes
Lorraine

As you know the Sloop is on the Monmouth - Chepstow road, if you come a short distance south towards Chepstow there was also a Ship Inn.

If you had gone a short distance south west from the Sloop up on the wooded area of the valley, there is a road running sort of parallel with the main Wye valley road and that is where the Lion Inn was. Cleddon Shoots behind it.

Mary Ann WILLIAMS 1869 Llandogo Burial (reply)

Dear Slowhands

The Sloop inn , Llandogo, was one of the places that me and my grandmother, Milbro, often stayed back in the 1960s and early 1970s when we had our annual holiday back down to visit her sisters, It didn`t belong to any Williams by that date but my gran said that her uncle ( cousin?) Victor Williams used to own it. Indeed on her father`s, Edwin Taylor Williams, death certificate the Sloop is listed as Victor William`s(nephew) address.
Other addresses associated with my branch of the williams family:

LLandogo Inglewood house
The Cabin

Monmouth Dixton Gate cottages (left to Mabel williams after death of husband Edwin)

Another pub listed as belonging to Edwin was the Lion pub. I never saw this in Llandogo. Do you know where it was? There was one of the same name in Trellech.

How`s the snow in your part of the world today?

Best Wishes

Edwin Taylor WILLIAMS 1869 -1915 Llandogo (reply)

Dear Slowhands

Thank you so much for taking the trouble to research so much info, there`s no way I`d have found all this out.

I`ve taken time to reply because my brain`s been a-boggle working out the possible connections thrown up by these facts.
I conclude that Edwin Taylor Williams`s (my great grandfather) mother Mary Ann died either giving birth to him or in the subsequent months of 1869. In the 1871 census Edwin Taylor (now aged 2) is not listed as living with his father John Williams 50 widower and his 4 other children. Edwin Taylor next appears on the census for 1881 now aged 12 and living with his maternal aunt Elizabeth Taylor nee Hopkins aged 58.

Then when he is 22 in the 1891 census still living with his aunt, 68, and her brother, his uncle Thomas Hopkins ,60. Do you think he was unofficially adopted by his aunt Elizabeth and her husband Mr Taylor on the death of his mother ?

This would tie in with his unusual middle name, Taylor. Maybe the Taylors were well-off and Edwin inherited from them on their death, because family legend always had it that Edwin was wealthier than the other Williams.

At 24 he married Lydia Mary Payne 37 , considerably older than him, I wonder if this was tied in with losing his mother so young ? Although I must add that his 2nd wife Mabel Tamplin my great grandmother was only 16 or 17 at time of marriage.

Could you advise me how to find out any more information i.e. marriage and death certificates of Elizabeth Taylor nee Hopkins ? How would I go about finding any Marriage or family photos ?
The only relevant one my family had was of Edwin as part of the Llandogo cricket team circa 1900s. He was a church warden at Llandogo church as well.

Thanks & Best Wishes
Lorraine

Williams of Pilstone farm Whitebrook (reply)

Dear May,
My great grandfather was Edwin Taylor Williams of Llandogo born 1869 died 1915 and buried at the church in Llandogo.
He was married twice, first to Lydia Mary Moulton (widow) nee Payne,
second marriage to my great grandmother, Mabel (I dont know her maiden name ! ) from Catbrook.

Edwins father was a John Williams from Llandogo, Trelleck. Do you think he was one of the Williams from Pilstone farm and that Edwins grandfather was William Williams ?

A William John Williams is listed as a witness on the certificate of Edwin`s first marriage, in 1893.

I would be ever so grateful if you could give me any more info on the Pilstone farm Williams.

William Williams abt 1856 Llandogo, Monmouth, Wales Son Llandogo

Williams of Pilstone farm Whitebrook (reply)

ª 1871 Pilstone Farm Whitebrook
ª

Thank you for your replies. The Pilstone Williams family is the right one and I have traced them back quite a way into their Welsh origins. It is that "grey" area just beyond living memory that interests me at present. I only have family stories with little corroboration.

Mattie is Martha Jane Williams nee Rosser, bapt Lydney 21 Oct 1860. She seems to be Martha on most official records (the exception being the 1891 census where she is listed as Mattie). She married Henry John Williams at St Johns Parish Church in Coleford on 25th January, 1887. She was the daughter of James Rosser who went to N Zealand (her sister is listed as born in NZ) but James and his family returned home when he inherited a share in a coal mine at Broadwell near Coleford.

Your notes about Martha studying out of county are interesting and I will do some spadework around that. How did you find that info?

The Crown Inn is now the only Pub open in Coalway. It did cross my mind that he may have had a butchers there but I have no proof. There used to be a field at the back of it where Sheep sales were held, I think the notices that were put out at the entrance gate read something like the Williams memorial sheep sale. Then houses were built on the field only a few years ago.

The Teagues you mentioned as boarders at Henry John's home in Edenwall:- he was also a butcher and is listed in Kellys as such in Coalway Lane End. It is interesting to note that the land adjoining the cottage (now a golf course) was owned by a Teague family at that time.

Slowhands, You know an awful lot about the Forest and where to look things up, and I for one, am very grateful to you.

I think my next step will have to be to the library for old books and the
newspaper archives. Then I can move on to look for Annie, William and Fred.

Many thanks

Williams - Coalway

Hello,

Although my Williams family originate from Llandogo, my gr grandfather came to Coalway and married Martha nee Rosser.

He was Henry John Williams who is listed as a publican (Crown Inn) and butcher at Coalway in the 1890's and early 1900's

Martha died soon after their second child Olive was born (1902) and Olive was brought up in Coleford by a family called (I believe) Wyatt.

I am looking for background info, as I also believe Martha was an artist and a schoolmistress but I can't seem to find out any more than that.

Does anyone know anything about these families or where the butchers shop was?
or can someone please point me towards some records that may help.
